AK lower Hanguard, do I need this clip

My new handguard from Ironwood does not have this slot, just wondering if I need this handguard fits tight without it?

mine

My wood, chicom handguard had such a clip. The east (?) german space plastic one I have does not. The choate I finally ended up using doesn't either.

I suspect the metal clip serves as a spacer to keep the hot bbl in extended full auto fire, from touching wood and scorching/igniting same, but this is just a hunch.

On AK47.Net a bunch responded as long as the guard is snug fitting it is not needed, it was used to compensate for production tolerances which can get very loose.

As the others have stated, you should be fine without it. It's just there for a little added support. I'd doubt you purchased nice walnut for your rifle with the intention of thrashing it about.
