How should you activate a pistol light?

I've been working on quickly drawing and activating a pistol mounted light and had some questions for those who know more than I.

I have a Streamlight Tlr-1.

Do you ever activate it with the index finger of the firing hand? That seems like the most reliable way for me.

When I activate it with my support hand pushing down on the toggle switch, I tend to throw shots off once the timer is on. Because of this, I tend to turn the light on and leave it on. I'm not nearly as worried about giving away my position as I am hitting what I'm aiming at. I'd like some outside input on this.

How and why do you employ your handgun mounted flashlight?

I tend to not use a WML over a handheld but I do have one on my gun. I activate the light with my support hand( index finger)
