Got to keep those dogs happy as well We sure have our share of pigs in Ga. I can't really tell much of a difference in boar meat but that may have to do with prep or just my old iron gut.

For me, the perfect hog gun is an AK with a red dot sight. I have only hunted hogs with bay dogs, and the shots are under 50 yds usually. Hit them right and they don't go more than a step or two if that. I used a Wolf 154gr soft point and it left a fist sized exit hole.
I got a 260lb sow this year and had it processed. Everyone I shared it with loved the flavor of the bacon, smoked hams, smoked canadian bacon etc. Best wild game I have ever eaten. Can't wait to get back for next years pig.

Shooting hogs should be fun!
I've got several rifles that will kill hogs, but the one I pick for fun is this 9.3x62 Mauser: With a 286 Nosler partition at 2,400 fps it has knocked over every hog with the first shot - They may kick some, but none of'em have gotten back up! That gun is a beast to sight-in off the bench, but I've never noticed the recoil shoot'in hogs. |

Also in georgias and hunt in middle georgia. I shot one a few years ago that was around 400lbs. Ive killed plenty of them in the 275-350 mark. Now that I want one on the wall I cant seem to kill a big un now. As far as equipment goes I have always shot them with a 7mm mag using 160 grn accubonds and had no plroblems droppin them in there tracks. Make a few bad shots onem and had to track them but never very far. They are very fun to shoot but a pain in the but when it comes time to plant plots.

300 Weatherby makes a good point about the 338-06 or the 35 Whelen. I can load 200 Hornadys at a mild 2500fps that will blow through the biggest hogs without making a mess.

Nothing is is perfect. But I've found that the 30-06, 8mm mauser and 7.62x39 all work well regardless of the pig's size.

It really depends on where and how you hunt them. In more open areas with relatively long shots, I use my 30-06. In thicker areas, I use my 1895G 45-70. I also carry a 454 on my hip. Shooting a 150 lb pig from an elevated stand is one thing but being in a heavily wooded area and finding yourself face to face with an old boar or a protective sow that weighs 400 lbs is another matter entirely.

My favorite hog gun down here in Florida is a '94 in 44 mag. Would love to get a Ruger Deer Slayer 44 mag but have yet to find one. If anyone has an extra one let me know

I've used three rifles for hog...
Marlin 1895SBL in .45/70 Marlin 1894C in .44 Magnum Marlin 336RC in .30-30 I've used the .44Mag the most, but I'm leaning towards the .45/70 more often due to the DRT feature. You hit one with a .45/70, it generally drops right there...no tracking into brush where it could turn on you. The .30-30, 85% DRT factor...the occasional one still runs a bit. Depends entirely on deflection. I was doing too much tracking into nasty brush with the .44 mag...after breaking their shoulder, not as much penetration with the larger calibers. And that ain't fun, with or without a dog.

I always thought that a double rifle in .444 or 45/70 would be cool to hunt hog with. I dont even know if one exist just thought it would be fun as long as it wasnt too heavy

Suppressed 300 Blackout for me:
Really, just about anything will do. .223 works fine too. I've seen pigs 200+ lbs. shot through the lungs die quickly, and they die even quicker when shot through the head. Regards, -Dan |

I am taking two guns along on the upcoming Texas Hog Hunt (our first). One is a Wincester Model 100 in 308 caliber. I'll use the 180 grain psp ammo in it.
Then I have a Saiga 12 ga also. Using a 5 round factory mag and a 1.5-6x40mm scope and 1 oz slugs. The plan is to take one hog with each gun, then compare the handling and shooting advantages of each. My companions will have Marlin 1894's, one in 44 mag and one in 30-30. Here are my two 'Hog Guns' ! |

Hogs Gone Wild; PennArms.com .....
I was watching a few eps of the new Discovery TV series; Hogs Gone Wild.
Most of the pigs they showed looked vile & disgusting. I think I'd pull out a Penn Arms 12ga "Street Sweeper", a AA-12 full auto or maybe a hand-held Dillon mini-gun like Jesse Ventura in Predator, www.IMFdb.org . Those hogs are gross and the TV "experts" claim the animals are filled with disease. CF www.PennArms.com www.Dillonaero.com |

I went to south texas with a group of guys in february. I used a 30-06 and shot one at 96 yards and one at 230 with it. Both shots behind the ear droped them. TC Venture 30-06, 150 gr. Hornady superformance, nikon prostaff. Worked great. Saw them shot with anything from 22-250 to 300 ultramag.

Honestly I'll shoot the vermin with whatever I have handy. Hogs aren't game animals and will not hold game status in my area. They breed like rabbits and rats only they eat a hell of a lot more. If I'm deer hunting it'll be anything from a .243 to a 30'06 with a lot mixed in. I never hit the swamp without my shotgun and a box or two of buckshot.
Heck I killed a big 300lb sow 2 years ago with heavy shot at about 5 yards and the two piglets with her with a boat oar. I cannot stand a wild pig but I've also seen the destruction and ruination of habitat that a heavy population can do so I shoot them whenever I see them. To answer the question on the boar, there is a point where a big boar just gets rank and not worth fooling with. I killed a big one last year and it took 3 weeks for the buzzards to get around to consuming it. There's folks around that calim they can process one so you can't tell but I have yet to see it. |

Here in TX i usually shoot them with my deer rifle. I will shoot the pests with whatever i have handy though. I hate them! After deer season I use hog hunting around feeders as an opportunity to try out guns i don't normally hunt with. Arisaka, M1 carbine, M1A, 38spl. snub, etc. all work fine when hit correctly. If i were to use one gun for piggies it would be an AR in 5.56.

'Nuther vote for the 45-70 Guide Gun. More than I may need but can't envision the scenario where it wouldn't be enough. I have some excellent boar meat in the freezer right now. Hog was mebbe a bit over 200#'s (300 TV #'s) and it smelled better than the domestic pork I bought to raise the fat content in my sausage. Guide Gun harvested this one but is not my only "hog gun".
Other "hog guns" include a 336 in 35 Rem, a 30-06 or two, a 94 in 30-30 or 45 Colt, a Sharps in 45-90 and mebbe even an evil black gun if the situation is right.

Has anyone tried Federal 00 Buck with Flight Control Wad on hogs?
I think that would give a fairly tight group and should tear em up, but then I've heard stories of the boars shoulder's stopping all kinds of rounds. |
