Hip-shooting a Mossberg 930

Just a question i had about the Mossberg 930 (or I guess any gas operated shotgun similar to it).

Why do they have feeding issues when fired from the hip without having a shoulder (or something) behind the stock to stop the recoil?
I understand that on recoil-operated guns, it's the rearward travel of the gun being suddenly stopped by the shoulder that allows the action to cycle.
But on gas operated shotguns it's just being cycled by the gas pressure from the shell. So as long as it fires, it should cycle. Regardless of how it's being held.

I mean, take any other gas-operated gun like an AK or AR and fire it from the hip and it will cycle just fine. But for some reason the shotguns choke unless properly shouldered.

My 1100s shoot just fine one handed, so I don't know what you are doing. (I do that often with new shooters who are afraid of the recoil to show them there isn't much)

With heavier loads they should work. My 1187 would not cycle light field loads unless it was against your shoulder. I know the conventional wisdom says it shouldn't work, but my Benelli works better at this than the gas operated Remington I used to own.

I've never tried my 930 from the hip. Next time out I will.

I tried it with my 930 SPX and it jammed every time. I suppose if you had some strong arms to realy hold it against the recoil it might cycle.

I didn't hold one loosely, but did fire a 930 SPX multiple times with birdshot and and cycled fine shooting at hip level, just held with the hands, not braced or tucked under arm.
