NRA Match Rifles

Nothing going on, just felt like posting some pictures.

Went to the range on Saturday to swap rear sights on my match rifles.

I seem to have a preference for the Winchester M70 action. The top rifle is a 30-06 Winchester Target I believe was made in the late 1970s. The lower one is a Model 70 action in .223 with a Hart barrel, jewell trigger, and Master Class stock.

I installed this Zelenak rear sight on the newer rifle. It has a Gehman diopter. This rifle shoots sub-moa groups with the ammunition I've tried so far, including surplus 62 grain SS109 and 69 grain match ammo from PRVI and Fiocchi. I'm going to have to put a shorter front sight riser block on this rifle as it is at the topmost limit of it's elevation adjustment but still hitting 6 inches low at 100 yards.

I put this Redfield International sight on the classic Winchester. It just looks "right" there. This rifle was further customized by a riflesmith (though he doesn't really call himself that) named Langley near Ironton, Ohio. He installed a Jewell trigger and tuned it to a lightness of pull I can only categorize as "scary". Langley's sport of choice is rimfire benchrest, so I suspect the hair trigger is a result of his preferences. The rifle is both conventionally bedded and pillar bedded.

Hardly a scratch on it.

The old-timer can still shoot. That is two seperate three shot groups at 100 yards with 1961 Lake City national match ammo. The lower group was 0.77 inches from edge to edge. The upper group was measured more conventionally from outer edge of hole to inner edge of the furthest hole for a center to center group size estimation. It was 0.58 inches.

I'm probably going to retire the 30-06 and switch to just the .223 for quicker shot to shot recovery speed and lighter, less flinch-inducing recoil (hey, even Tubb complained about the .308!). Probably end up selling it so I can get a dishwasher or something for my new house...

A man after my own heart. I have 4 match rifles that were stocked by Alex Sitman. A true artist. He even took a rimfire prone stock and reworked it into a tiny prone rife for my wife. Howard

OK, I'm no photographer so give me a break. I have a couple Palma rifles I'll post. For those that don't know what Palma is... its .308 155gr bullet, shot from a rifle with iron sights, prone, no rifle rest or bi-pod alowed, but a sling is. The match is 3 stages, shot at 800, 900, and 1000 yards. The Midwest Palma adds a 1200 yard stage.

This is a Barnard action, Mastin off-set stock, Krieger 12 twist barrel, put together by Mac Tilton

This is a Sprotco action, McMillen stock, Boots Obemeyer 13 twist barrel, built by Alan Warner.

In competition or the field...there are no benches.
