Convoy : question about distance

hello,
Sorry for my English, but it's not my maternal language !!! ( Belgium )

I have a question : in a convoy, what is for you the " best " ( I don't like this word, because nothing is best in tactic before having the solution...but when you have the solution, it's mean that the problem went away ) distance between two vehicules.
I take for exemple a military's convoy ( mine ! ), +-15 Vehicules,that have to pass in opened and closed field (village for ex, woods ) for a travel of 250 Km.
Threat : like the present time in Afgh, Irak or Kosovo.
I'm really interested by your inputs, thank you.

I would have no idea. Yours is a situation that we do not really deal with. We have to deal with car jackers (thieves who pull you out of your car) but not ambushes or roadside bombs. I would think that your military would have acceptable tactics for that. Don't they?

In the U.S. we may have vehicles leaving a disaster area like a hurricane, and family units may want to keep in sight of each other, especially in the danger area, like inside New Orleans city. That way they could help respond to an emergency.

It depends on your situation. If you're worried about an ambush then keeping distance between vehicles prevents everyone from being in the kill zone. If your sharing the road with potential enemy vehicles and they might infiltrate your convoy then you want to stay close in order to prevent the enemy from inserting a suicide bomber in your formation and taking out a vehicle or seperating individual vehicles from the rest of the convoy for attack

We've been training to keep close and not have gaps in urban areas but allow space in rural areas.

First, Fabs, welcome to The Firing Line!

You'll find a wealth of information here, along with a bunch of great folks.

That said, while I'm sure you're question is innocent, you have to understand that it's also a two-edged sword. Folks posting this information are also making it accessible to the world, including people who would gladly use it against us.

This particular information would assist insurgents in the placement and timing of IED's, and I'm not comfortable in taking the tiniest chance on that.

I may be overreacting, but I think this one's best off closed.
