What's out there - .410 Coach Guns

Well, I’m thinking about a .410 side by side coach gun; my price point is under $500. All that I really see out there are the high end collectables, the CAI and the Stoeger’s.

The high ends are out of my range and I’m iffy on the CAI stuff.

The Stoeger looks nice but I’ve heard that it’s stiff until broken in. I’m not interested in the security model; I’ve read all kind’a bad crap about it. How stand up is the Stoeger 20” .410 Coach???

What else is out there?

I have a stoeger Uplander supreme 12 gauge(28 inch barrels) and while I really like it I did have to send it back to the factory for a loose tang safety and double fires. I would imagine a 2 trigger model might be a safer bet on the stoeger.

They're not bad for the money and the warranty is pretty solid. They turned it around pretty quickly too.

My youngest daughter shot a .410 Stoeger Coach Gun for her first year in SASS. It's a good little gun. It was a bit stiff when new. but it wasn't difficult to slick up enough for a 13 year old girl to shot.

She just turned 14 so she is having to move up to a bigger gun. She's getting a Stoeger Uplander Supreme 20 Gauge for Christmas.

Her mother shoots a Stoeger 20 Gauge Uplander and I shoot a Stoeger 12 Gauge Coach Gun. Lots of folks shoot Stoegers in Cowboy Action.

I'm keeping the .410. I like that little gun. I've got some grand kids that may be interested in shooting Cowboy before long. With the Stoeger .410, the Henry Youth .22, and a pair of Heritage Rough Riders I already have guns for them.

That's why I got a .410 MEC Grabber and 1000 once-fired Win AA hulls when my daughter was competing with a .410.

Want a .410? Try the ATI .410 O/U...,a sweet little shooter.
I also have a Stoeger .410 SXS with the 20" barrels. The ATI has 24 inch barrels and is more than a pound lighter.

I paid $125 for a barely used .410 Grabber. I got a really good deal on it.

I ran across another really good deal on the hulls.

Now, I'm pretty set up for .410.

Thanks guys; I'm going to keep this in mind. There is so much out there in 20G that it really makes me wonder if a low powered 20 isn't more attractive than a .410. 410 still has my interest peaked though I have put this on hold.

There are two advantages to a 20 gauge.....power isn't one of them. Pellets from a .410 have as much power as from a 20. The advantage of the 20 is that there are more pellets. The other advantage is that 20 gauge shells cost less.

If you reload, you can get the 20 down to 28 gauge weight (3/4oz)using ClayBuster wads. I reload 3/4 oz in 12 and 20 for targets and small game. Using 8.5s, it crushes targets

All shotguns have "about the same" amount of power. The difference will be the weight of the charge.
Velocity varies across each gauge, dependent on the load.

The 20 for instance in 3" magnum guise pretty much killed off the 16 gauge.

Back in the day shotguns went all the way to 4 gauge. The 28 has always been the smallest gauge AFAIK I'm sure there is something out there that is smaller and obscure. No .410 is a caliber, not a gauge.

There is a 32 gauge but it is typically not found here in the US

Wrong, or perhaps poorly worded.

Most shotguns have roughly the same MUZZLE VELOCITY given a full length barrel. Usually somewhere from 1000-1600 FPS depending on the load. It's generally a medium-velocity proposition.

Now with different gauges (and in some cases, calibers) you will naturally have different payload weight be it buckshot, slugs, etc. etc. In general, the larger the gauge (technically the "smaller" the gauge) the larger the payload, with varying levels of muzzle velocity, will still equate to great kinetic energy.

So no, all shotguns do NOT have "about the same" amount of power. Power when speaking about firearms is generally measured in ft-lbs or joules. I think what you were trying to say was the velocity is similar, and as I stated it is. But don't think for a minute that a .410 as the same amount of "power" as a 12 gauge, given the same barrel length.

I have a Stoeger coach gun in 12 ga. that I purchased barely used for $270.
It continues to be somewhat stiff after my sons and I have enjoyed busting clays with it numerous times.
Goes bang every time without issue.
I found the auto safety feature annoying so it is now a manual safety.
Fit and finish is not perfect, but it is also not so bad either.
Besides it just kind of looks cool with the leather lace on cheek pad/shell holder I found for it.

I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one in .410 should the opportunity arise at the right price, just sayin.
