Peter Weber: Not sure what happened to a couple of posts - I and someone else had responded to you earlier. Anyway, the book gives a range of 1974 to 1977 for the "N2" range. The last half of the range was mostly M28s and M58s. Considering how low your "N2" number is, 1974 is a good bet, but it's not possible to be positive.

spleify: Yours looks to be early 1992, but they were using the 3-letter prefixes out of sequence around that time, so again it's not possible to be sure.

I don't know if this matters or not but it does have the firing pin on the hammer, if this tells you anything. Any advantage to this?

Firing pin on the hammer would be correct for 1992, but it doesn't help with the dating. The change to the frame-mounted pin on the 629DX didn't come along until the "-5" in 1997. (Yours should be a "-3", BTW.) The 629DX model was discontinued in 2002, but lives on (sort of) as the 629 Classic series.

Spleify: S&W designates engineering and/or design changes to a particular model by appending a "dash" number to it. Usually (your 629DX is an exception) the original release of a model is simply the model number, and is referred to as the "no dash." When there are changes to that basic model, a dash number is added to indicate the variation, for example 10, 10-1, 10-2, etc.

Your 629DX was introduced as the 629-3 because the basic 629 had been in production since 1979 and there had already been changes designated as the -1 and -2 variations (the major change with the -1 was to eliminate the recessed cylinders and pinned barrel; for the -2 there was a new yoke retention system and some other changes).

If you open the cylinder and look at the area of the frame cutout that's exposed you'll find the model number - yours should say 629-3 (there may be some other numbers in there as well, you can ignore them). If not, then we'll need to rethink the birthdate (the -3 was made from 91 to 93).

Hi guy's...I found a couple more S&W in my father-in-laws collection. The first is a Model 15-2 .38 Special with Serial #K6467XX. The other is a .22LR Revolver with Serial #907XX. Thanks guy's, they're in need of some cleaning, but look to be in VGC.

I think he inheirited them from his father-in-law back in '83. And now I'm inheiriting them and plan on passing them down to my kids too. When the time comes.

I just acquired a model 60-7, .38 special in a trade yesterday and was wondering what you generous folks would be able to tell me about it. It is serial #BNA25xx. It is stainless, 2" barrel (or thereabouts) and has a square butt. I was wondering when it was made, and whether or not it is rated +p.

Shooter-from-show-me: Your model 15-2 is from 1965.

Is the .22 on a slightly smaller frame than the model 15? Did you take the serial number from the butt? If so it is probably a Model 34 .22/32 Kit Gun. The serial number dates it to between 1960 & 1965.

If the .22 is on the same frame sizer as the model 15 then it may be a model 18 or a model 14 or a model 45. Is their a C S, or K prefix in front of the serial number on the butt. (ignore numbers stamped inside the frame). Is the front sight ramped or square cut? Does it have a fixed or adjustable rear sight?

sttaffy: February or March 1993. The Standard Catalog of S&W notes that the 60-7 had a new heat treatment, so I am assuming it will be safe to shoot with PlusP. If in doubt call S&W and ask.

I have a S&W model 19-4. My eyes are not as good as they used to be but the serial number looks like 71K8**. Anyone have an idea what year this was manufactured.

mj2007: 71K prefix would be 1980 (there should be 4 digits following the "K", however).

Thanks Flyfish. Yes there are 4 numbers after the K. My revolver is in excellent shape. I purchased it around a year ago. Its finish looks almost new and it it shoots great.

range_rider13: 1985. 586s are on my short list of S&W favorites. I have a couple of them, one of which was modified to round butt. The job was so well done that I bought it thinking it had come from the factory that way.

xanth: 1975-76 according to the book, but almost certainly 1975 based on how early in the "N3" range it is.
