I found (in my safe) a very nice 6" M&P 5 screw, Serial number C103595

Can anyne tell me when the C series began and ended and the approximate DOB?

C-prefix began in 1948.

1948-51 C1-C223998 Yours would fall into this timeframe.

The C prefix ended in 1967.

C103595 = 1948 to 1951 (C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951).
"C" prefix ran from 1948 to 1967 (C1 in 1948 to C999999 in 1967).

A friend of mine came across a small snub revolver and we have finally identified it as a S&W Terrier (Pre-model 38/32). I am looking to sell it but would like to know approximately when it was made. I know it was made before 1957 because it has no stamping for a model number and the gun was produced starting in 1936.
Serial number is 712XX.
Anyone willing to give me an approximate date?

It's a K22 w/6" barrel SN= K4026xx

I am LOOKING FOR a K38 w/6" barrel of about the same manufacture so that I have a pair.. eventually I may also purchase a K32

Serial number is 712XX.

The .38/32 Terrier (Pre-War) started production in 1936 at serial number 38976 and ran to 1940 at serial number 54474.
The .38/32 Terrier (Postwar) (pre model 32) ran from serial number 54475 in 1948 to 122678 in 1974.
To get you closer, the trigger guard screw (upper front of trigger guard) was eliminated in 1953 and the upper side plate screw was eliminated in 1955 (from 4 sideplate screws to 3).

Jim, yes that gets me closer. It's pre-1953 then, because it does have the trigger guard screw. Wow, so it's older than I thought.
If anyone knows a little more about these I'd love to know more about them in general.

I inheritied my grandfather's S&W .38 Special when he passed away in 1994. He was a mitilitary policeman in the army during WW2 and I initially thought it might be his army revolver. But having read some of the posts here, I think it is most likely a more recent model.

However, the number on the butt starts with 2D30XXX. Inside the revolver arm there is another number with 5 digits beinging with 96XXX. Also on the revolver arm, there is what looks to be an "after market" (for lack of a better word) stamp or engraving. It looks like it reads E13. But I can only read the top half of it. Are there any posts here that mention serial numbers such as this or any type of "after market" stamp/engraving. Are these things typical or can I hang on to the hope that there is something special about my grand dad's gun?

That is the serial number and dates it to 1977.
The other numbers/markings are assembly numbers.

4506's were made from 1988 to 1999. The closest I can get is the "V" prefixes started in 1994.

I have a smith 3 and a half inch victory model .38 sw. The serial number is v 490xxx. it is stamped converted by cogswell and harrison ltd. london.

the second is a top break 38 sw the serial number is 200xxx.

if anyone could give me any history i would appriecaite it. I love history and would love to know more about my two 38.

V490XXX = 1942 to 1944. The 38 S&W versions were made for British military use. Many were converted to 38 Special after the war and resold. Cogswell and Harrison was one of several doing conversions.

That serial number was used on two models:
.38 Double Action 3rd Model. SN's ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895.
.38 Safty Hammerless 4th Model. SN's ran from 116003 in 1898 to 220000 in 1907.

Hey Jim thanks for the help. The second gun is the hammerless so I guess its from 1907. Wow thanks its cool to know that a gun in my safe is over 100 years old.

The victory gun is really cool too. So it could have been carried by a Britsh officer.

S&W did not start using model numbers (and stamping them on the frame) until 1957/58. Before that they only went by names (Chiefs Special, Safety Hammerless, Military and Police, etc.).

I'm putting my smith up for sale and would like to know what year it was made. #'s are 437127 gun is a 4 inch barrel and a 38 special CTG,it's 90% engraved by Kurt Jager from Mainz Germany.only other numbers on it are, 02093 on the frame and on back of crane.first set of numbers are on behind grips and on the face of the cylinder.Attachment 56607
