First deer I took was with a .410 shottie loaded up with S&B's 00 buck. I have taken more deer with that combo than with any of the rifles I have ever had.

I'll join the exclusive 35 Remington club with 'sleepy'. Dad had loaded up some 200 gr Silver Tips and I leveled two back to back that the dogs were running. Devastating round.... both dropped immediately. Of course, I was lucky enough to be standing within 20 yards of them too. I'm sure that helped.

Ain't happened yet, but the two guns I figure are the most apt in the collection are a sporterized type 99 with Lyman peeps and a scoped Marlin...
...so either 7.7 Arisaka or a nice middle-load 300gr LFP .444 Marlin

Took my first deer with a Beretta made 6.5mm Italian service rifle in 1952. He was shot through the heart and was DRT. Still have that rifle and the antlers of that 8 point buck.

my first was a small doe with my grandfathers 16 gauge 870. i was 13 at the time. i gut shot her in my excitement & then ran her down. gramps chastised me for shot placement & chasing the deer but later said he was quite proud that i found it. he made me do the field dressing & i puked twice from the horrid smell. i told myself i would never shoot a deer in the gut again. i graduated after that to his woodmaster 300 savage pump & was considerably more accurate with that. thanks for bringing back the memories. great times with my grandfather. 43 years later i still have the love of the outdoors & hunting & fishing. i now use a custom Vanguard in 270 win & enjoy the sport as much as then.

Caliber?......first Whitetail???.....
It was a full length 2016 Gamegetter with a 125 gr Satellite broadhead. Shot from a PSE Phaser II in the early 80's. Range of about 15 yards, from a ground ambush. Ken

Shot my first one a loooooooong time ago with a borrowed model 788 Remington in .308 from my "Papaw." I was too young at the time for my own deer rifle, but a year or two later I talked Dad into buying my trusty .35 Rem 336. I'd never heard of the round, and I'm not sure Dad had ever used one... but he knew then that it was a dandy round. Now I do too.

My first, you ask? Ithaca 12 gauge Deerslayer 24" barrel, Federal F127RS slugs in the red and white box. I shot the doe first and the buck walked over and stood in her hoofprints, so I shot him too. 3 shots, 2 finishers with a 357, 2 deer, and a half mile drag at dark thirty by myself to the car. Man, was I tired and elated.

All deer I've ever taken have been with a 7mm Rem Mag. Nails 'em like the Hammer of Thor! Hopefully, this weekend I'll be able to get my Marlin XL7 in .30-06 bloody. If successful, it'll be done with a 165 grain Hornady Interlock over H380.

30/06 at 180 yds on a stationary whitetail buck with a perfect broad side shot. was using 180 gr. nosler partitions, IMR 4895 and cci bench rest primers and winchester brass. gun was a winchester model 70 (pre 64) with krieger heavy sporter barrel with lyman model 17 front sight and wiliams rear peep sight. The buck fell in his spot and never got up. I was 14 at the time. buck field dressed at 224 and the rack scored 168. This was up in South Dakota where I grew up.

I was about 8 years old, living on a farm. I went to the store paid 25 cents for three 16 gage shotgun shell (buck shot), and an old single shot 16 gage that belonged to my grandfather. Now back then I'd set around for hours listening to stories of deer hunting. How deer would get you with their antlers or feet if you wern't careful.
So early one morning I was put on a stand, while my uncle started out to make the drive. I was there about 20 minutes when I heard something running toward me, when got in sight I just knew it was comming after me. I fired, it went down and got back up, The extractor was screwed up and you had to pry the hull out with a knife. The sucker kept coming and I knew I was dead, I shot again and he went down again, only to get up again. I shot the third time and killed him. Don't know what I would have done if I needed a third shot. I only had three. Anyway I ended up with that shotgun, I think it was only supposed to be used with Black powder, but who knew that then, certainly not an 8 year old kid.

kraigwy, thats a funny story. I think I was around 8 or 9. Shot a doe with my first gun-'Buckbuster' single shot 12 ga. loaded with 2 3/4 Rem. slugger.Hunted with it for years and started all my boys out on it. They`ve all shot their first deer with it. Grandkids next victims. It seems to kick harder today than it did then.

I believe I was twelve when I got my first whitetail. I was using my father's 20 ga. I believe that it was a Smith and Wesson. I liked it because of its iron rifle sights.

It was with a 30-30 and like most on this forum I immediately upgraded the following year to a 30-06 thinking I needed a rifle that would enable me to shoot longer distances...and then two years later the 7Mag.
Reality? Most of the deer I have taken have been at less than a 100 yards and I have only shot perhaps 1 or 2 in the 23 years I have been hunting that would have stretched the ability of the 30-30 but boy I sure look better carrying that 7Mag when I was younger... |

12ga
A 90 yard shot to the spine, dead before she hit the ground. I live in Indiana and we are limited to shotguns or pistol caliber rifles. needless to say I cant complain with the performance of a 12ga sabot round, talk about human kills.

First deer was a spike taken with my dads single shot 20 gauge loaded with buckshot. One shot to the vitals, deer didn't run more than 20 yards or so before going down. Deer was probably 35 or 40 yards away, maybe closer. Still have the gun and still hunt small game with it, but not deer. I was around 7 or 8 I think.

I'm with Kametc on this one!!!
A 50# Bear Recurve with a cedar arrow. I still have the bow but it's been so long since I shot it I can't recall the weight of the Fred Bear broadhead. Like Kam I also killed my first doe on a stalk. I was able to hide my profile behind some tall grass for most of the stalk until I reached the low cut portion of the field where she and another doe were feeding. Then I took one arrow out of my quiver and left the quiver behind and did a belly crawl for another 25 or 30 yards to close the distance to 35 yards. I waited until neither deer was looking, took a knee, knocked my arrow and double lunged the biggest doe! My first rifle kill was shortly after that with a Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle in .280 caliber. I think I shot a 140 grain bullet. |
