What's your Coyote round

Time to get our minds off big game for a bit. After the deer season dust settles, there are plenty of dogs to bust, so what are ya bustin'em with?

I'll get started with 223 and a 50 gr v-max!

I really like my 22-250. It's just a cheap stevens but it will shoot.

I have used 22magnum and a just in case. But i prefer a 5.7

If I'm specifically hunting coyotes, I use my old Ruger 77 in 220 Swift. I know I'm good to 350 with it, and think that I'm good to 400. Out past that, I'm untested. I shoot the 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, pushed by a near-max load of IMR4064 and CCI BR primers. The truth, as I remember it, is that only 2 coyotes have escaped me once I had the crosshairs on them. One I hit high in the leg and got him later in the week. The other was an outright complete miss at maybe 60 yards. I'm sure glad nobody was watching that fiasco. A shameful miss...

Jeep Grand Cherokee or Skidoo MXZ seem to be pretty effective and pack alot of knock down power.

But in all seriousness, I like the .30 carbine out of my M1. Nothing like shooting 10 coyotes in 15 seconds with 15 rounds of the bait. Low recoil, but still packs enough punch to kill em with one shot with a hit in the sweet spot.

For hides I like the 222 and 223 with 55 grain soft points. The old Winchester PP bullets work very well and are not very hard on the hides.
If the hide is not something I am going to sell, I use what ever I have handy.

I have killed them with rifles from 22 LR to 50-140 Sharps and with handguns from 22 LR to 454 Casull. I have also killed a few with both 12 and 20 gauge shotguns

An 85 grain sierra bthp @ 3200 fps. From the muzzle of my 1972 remington 700 bdl in .243 winchester. Bocoup bon "juju" on all types of varmints especially @ long range & under high wind conditions.

My savage 12 FV in 223 rem. using 55 grain nosler ballistic tips. Its good out past 500 yards. I got one the other day while looking for an injured horse. Shot it on horseback with my puma m92 in 357 at alittle over 100 yards.

On this year's Antelope hunt, I plugged at least one 'yote with a 140 grain Partition (.270 Winchester). (Though several members of my hunting party are now convinced they were coyote-wolf crossbreeds.)

If I'm going out specifically for coyotes: Speer 100 gr HP, at ridiculous velocity, in .270 Win (I don't like any of the 90s). Hornady 75 gr HP in my .243 Win wildcat. Fiocchi/Armscor 45 gr SP, in .22 WMR (requires more patience).

NOPE!!! Not at all on my end...

But I do kill them just because they carry diseases to places that spread it thru pet populations...
I kill them because they screw my dogs and make unwanted litters of "coy-dogs"...
I kill them because they get in my garbage on trash night...
I kill them because they kill the chickens and the ones who live quit laying "boneless chicken" orbs I need for breakfast for my grand daughter and myself...
I kill them in the woods because the US Military folks who run the Eglin AFB WMA asked me to shoot all I see since their population has exceeded the ability for turkeys and quail (and other small animals) to keep up with offspring production...
I kill them because they try to steal the pigs my dogs catch which resuls in my dogs getting injured or worse, make them either dog aggressive or "pig shy" if they get beat up enuff...

Brent, I know you don't have to explain yourself but thanks for sharing, I learned a couple of things, seems like you live on farmland, I live in the city so I don't realize what you guys go through, what does a cyote-dog look like? cute-ugly?

Can go either way... Consider the variation of domestic dog characteristics...

There is a strain here officially referred to as "black coyotes" they all seem to share a white "blaze" on their chest... Much like montana stock dogs often have...

But I assure you all... You do not want to cross a coy-dog bred of a bulldog type or other "aggressive" breeds... You never lose the skittish nature of the yote as they live wild but now instead of a few fear bites (actually just nips compared to their potential) and they flee... You now have fear based reaction with bulldog/rottie/other tenacity, strength, endurance and prey drive triggered kill response... Wouldn't be something to face unarmed...

And just cuz you live in the city and you do not see them... don't mean they are not among you and more chance of coy-dog variants.... I remember an "orange german shepherd" that I told my folks about in oklahoma city... It was runnin' in a pack of feral dogs... He was biggest and obviously pack leader. I described him as runnin' like a yote but had long hair and the colr pattern was saddle like a shepherd but mainly bright orange like morris the cat.

That was decades before I heard of a coy-dog

Coyote are not much threat to larger live stock such as beef but they are hell on chickens. Even with a good coop to protect the chickens just having the coyotes harassing them stresses them out and they slow way down laying eggs.

but to be honest I think they Coyote population is way down. I think they are having a hard time competing with the newly introduced wolves.

I am really interested in shooting some coyotes this year as their population is increasing around here. I have a Stevens 200 in .243(Federal 80 gr. power shok) and a AR in .223(jacketed HP) that I guess will work well. It's new to me, though.

I bet the wolves are managing the coyote population up there in Idaho! From what I have read a wolf will hunt down a coyote just to kill it.

Here in North East Texas the coyote is "Top Dog"! It is the top predator so it just eats and breeds!
I got into chasing coyotes because a good friend lost two calves one spring to them.
I also have 4 different places I hunt that the owner lost the family pet to coyotes.
They are turning to domestic pets because they are easier to catch than the cottontails around here. They will still eat a cottontail, they will just drive by the fast food joint first!!

We have a few coydogs around here as well. One was killed after it attacked some hunting dogs, it weighed 67lbs. Some locals say that the coydog mix is why our coyotes are a bit larger then other areas. (50-60lbs top end, 40-50 not uncommon) Some of the old timers say our coyotes have a strong line of the Red Wolf that once was common in this area.

I put two rounds of #4 buckshot in one this morning that ambushed my decoy from the wrong direction! 1st round hit it hard but it still turned into a fur rocket. Second shot was a hail marry at about 60 yards on its way out!

They are ruthless!

I would rather take a round of 50BMG to the foot than a 22short to the base of the skull. all 26 of my guns are 45/70 govt, 357 mag, 22 or 12 ga... I believe in keeping it simple. Wish my wife did as well...
