used to have a Remington SPS turkey gun W/ a 21" choke tube barrel that did double duty as my HD and hunting shotgun. As time has gone by I aquired other hunting shotguns and the 870 was relagated to closet duty only. With mydive into Cowboy Action shooting I bought a IAC 1897 Winchester copy and finding that it is reliable and accurate (It'll cloverleaf slugs at 25 Yards all day) I sold my 870 and the '97 has been fielding the closet HD duty since.
I did add a old school tacticool leather butt cuff that holds 4 extra shells and provides a little padding for my shoulder.

redlevel42 +1 on that coach gun, Mines an old ranger cut down to 18 1/2 inch barrels, and the same 5 shot shell holder as yours, 1'st barrel is No 4 buck, 2'nd barrel is single 0 buck, but my nightstand buddy is my old security six in .357

I also have an older Remingtom M11 for HD. I bought it for $75.00 from a fellow that kept it on his fishing boat. "For sharks" he said.
The end of the barrel was rotted out from blood & salt water and the receiver was pitted pretty bad also. I had to shorten the barrel in the lathe to 21" and solder on a new front sight. I then polished up the receiver as best I could and put on a 2 shot mag extension. I sanded and put a coat of laquer on the stock and forearm. A shake & bake finish was the final touch to cover my mistakes. I was a little concerned if it would cycle with the shortened barrel but it works great. I may add a recoil pad later. Total cost: A little under $200.00.

Hey efield,
I'd sure like to see a photo of your chopped down Model 11. I've thought of buying a second old Model 11 or maybe a Remington Sportsman with at least 20" of salvagable barrel so I could cut it down and install a rifle sight for use with rifled slugs or with about #1 buck as a riot type shotgun for HD. |

Bone stock Remington 870 Express Magnum 12ga with 20" smoothbore slug barrel loaded with Remington 3" #4 Buck. I picked the gun up for $150 from a coworker and I've been very pleased with it. I did try a 3-shot mag extension, but when fully loaded it made the gun, IMHO, too heavy and poorly balanced. I also keep a converted Saiga 223 loaded with 20 rounds of Winchester 45grn JHP and a S&W 629 loaded with Speer 240grn Gold Dots handy. If all else fails, I also have a H&R Pardner 10ga in the closet with 5 rounds of Remington BB shot in a butt cuff.

12 double 00 buck pelets per shell in Remington 870 with factory folding stock and TNN coach gun with real hammers (some Coach guns have hammers that do not function and are just there for decoration) But this leads to another question, what kind of ammo. Some people like slugs, others #4 or #7, and I recently heard of tri ball which is three .60 caliber balls

I don't know much about the tri-ball I mentioned in my last post and I am not sure if I am hijacking this thread or maybe I should start a second thread about ammo

Win 1300
With #1 buck and 2 slugs at the end of the tube. Have a buttcuff with 00 that I don't use because I feel like it adds too much weight and throws off the balance.

Rem 1100, which also doubles as my deer hunting weapon(when I choose to use a shotgun). For SD it stays at the ready loaded with 00 buck.

A shotgun isn't my go-to HD gun of choice.
The closest thing I have to a HD shotgun is a R-1100-Trap with a cut down extra barrel. |

1970 12-gauge 870 Wingmaster with 18.5" barrel and 7+0 00 Buckshot (empty chamber). I've added a barrel clamp and a sling since this pic was taken. Racking the pump in the middle of the night might not scare off the BG but it will help get my blood moving and let'em know that I am armed with more than harsh words.

Remington 870 Express 20 ga. 26" barrel, loaded with whatever I happen to have from the last rabbit/squirrel hunt (7 1/2's right now).
No lights, lasers, mag extensions, pistol grips, extra shell holders, or fancy tactical slings. The scatter gun is not my primary home defense weapon, but is easily accessible (to me), so it does double duty. If it was the primary weapon, I would throw a 18-20" barrel on it........and nothing else.

I do think for shooting in close quarters a 26" barrel would be less maneuverable so I agree about switching to s shorter barrel. And although I do own some full auto guns I would avoid using the because they would be taken and stored as evidence which could deprive me of my gun for months or years. So the question remains if the shotgun is not your go to gun what is?
