Ruger Standard barrel swap

An old ruger standard was gifted to me. I'm trying to figure out if the barrel could be swapped for one of the longer thicker barrels?

Edit: Turns out it's a standard not a MK 1

Mark 1 to Mark 1 should be no problem.

You can also contact Volquartsen Custom for a specialty barrel.

I’ve always wanted to put a 10/22 barrel on a Standard Ruger pistol. Make up a carbine type gun with detachable stock. I had a Standard model that I picked up in a lot from small PD selling evidence guns. Had barrel cut to about 1.5”. I sold gun and 10/22 barrel to another guy before I got around to working on it.

The black eagle was done in memorial to Mr Sturm, the earlies models had a red one.

Ok, changing the barrel on a Mk I or standard model is not a trivial task, Changing the entire "upper" on the frame is simple. However, unlike most pistols where the frame is the serial # part (and legally the firearm) the Ruger has the serial # on the receiver tube (the action).

I'm not certain, but I think the barrel is press fitted into the receiver. If so, its not a job for the average small shop gunsmiith.

I'd call Ruger, first, and see if they are willing/able to do the work. If not, then I'd call one of the major shops specializing in Ruger custom work.

Wouldn't be 'easy' on any Ruger .22. Whole barrel assembly is a really serious press fit. Doable as a DIY thing if you have a good 4" bench vise and a great big rubber mallet. Had one years ago and thought it'd be a good idea to strip it. It was not. Although the barrel assembly wasn't the hard part.
Kind of suspect finding a barrel would be the issue. Some parts must be fiddled with by Ruger or not at all. They don't sell parts that, according to them, must be dealt fitted in the factory. It'll say on the parts list in your manual(or on line) which part those are.

Ruger MkII has a threaded barrel and receiver, same as a MkI.

Mine came off easily enough. I used a barrel vise, we had the inserts available, as we did custom work on them at the time.
