45 LC and Power Pistol
Since it,s been so hard to get, can any of the experts help me with a load for 45lc using Power Pistol. I use this for all my Handloads, it works great. Thanks for any responses. 250 gr. Plated bullet.

I'll give you a bump myself. I love power pistol in many of my guns, and would like to use it in 45 colt too.

Speer #13 has a load for a 255 gr cast bullet using 7.3 - 8.3 gr of PP, with an OAL of 1.665".
There's a note that this OAL is longer than industry maximum and is not for use in repeating rifles, but will work with most revolvers. I know you're using plated bullets, but hopefully this would give you a ballpark to start in. There's also a load for a 260 gr JHP using 7.8 - 8.4 gr of PP and an OAL of 1.590" |

Power Pistol
Thanks for the info guys. There seems to be a lot of variations in loads for JHC, JHP,RNFP, 255gr. 230gr. Just have,nt found that perfect recipe yet ! I think for now between the book recipe's and your post I,m going to load 7.9gr. @ 1.595-1.600 O.A.L. Loaddata.com was a little help, so I,ll keep looking, but anyone else with more load info would be greatly appreciated.

srsmith,
I'm a little confused by your post, and want to make sure that *my* post wasn't incorrect or unsafe. In your printout for the 250 gr Hornady bullet, the powder charge only went up to 6.3 gr before the loads became unsafe. But in the load I posted from Speer #13, the *starting* load is 7.3 gr. I realize there's a slight difference in OAL and bullet weight between the two recipes, as well as the fact that one's for cast and the other for JHP, but that still sounds like an excessive difference in powder charge. |

I was surprised also.
Whenever there is a big difference in loads, it is good idea to sort out the differences. I will double check the QL model. -steve |

Alliant has an email form for load requests on their site.
I got a PP load for my 41 Mag from them.

Updated load data.
I am back at home with my references and found good information on Power Pistol in the 45 Colt.
The data in my post above was wrong so I deleted it. --- Here is correct load data with references: Load data from Hornady Seventh edition for standard revolver loads. 7.5" Ruger Bisley 250 gr Hornady XTP #45200 OAL = 1.595 Gr of Power Pistol 6.9 Min for 600fps 8.7 Max for 850 fps -- A correct QL model for the shows: Cartridge : .45 Colt (SAAMI) Bullet : .452, 255, LYM LSWC 454424 Useable Case Capaci: 27.777 grain H2O = 1.804 cm³ Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 1.595 inch = 40.51 mm Barrel Length : 7.6 inch = 193.0 mm Powder : Alliant POWER PISTOL 7.0 Gr for 7116 psi 9.0 gr for 11191 psi -- For plated bullets, you should be ok in lower part of the range. I apologize for any confusion or concern I have caused. Be Safe and Have Fun ! -steve |
