Mossberg 702 plinkster

Anybody had an experience with the Mossberg 702 Plinkster? I was told I could find them for a hundred bucks, but my luck all i can find it for is 130.00. Now at Academy I can get a ruger 10/22 for 209. This Would be beater rifle. Thrown behind the seat of a truck and topped with a cheap scope. I already have a 10/22 i dont wanna mess up. My question being is worth the extra 80 bucks to go head and pick up another 10/22? Thanks for any input given.

Wifeys first long gun was a plinkster -- then I turned it into ---- "The Pinkster" --

Then dropped my old Bushnell on it --

Its a cheap rifle -- IMO -- great for a beginner --

Now shes up to 3 -- all pink

I have the Rossi RS22 that is identical to the 702 with a slightly different stock and they are made at the same place. I paid $119 at Rural King before they lowered the price to $99.99. Great little lightweight gun that performs well and is accurate.

We have and shoot both. Seem to have repeated FTFeed issues with the Plinkster. Probably magazine related issues. I'd spend the extra for a much more reliable 10/22.

AS I said, I have the same gun with my Rossi but I have the 702 25 round magazine. I have never shot it with the OEM magazine but I have never had an issue of any kind with the larger magazine.

They're good, probably the best .22 rifle you can get for $100, but you'd have to wait for Black Friday to get them at that price. Even for $130, I can't think of a better .22 at that price and I don't think spending an extra $80 on a 10/22 is worth it for being a "beater" rifle.

Between the 702 and a stock 10/22, the 702 actually has a better trigger. The magazine release isn't as clunky as the 10/22's, the rifle is very light, and it's pretty accurate, it's actually more accurate than a bolt action Marlin I have. The 10 round mags are small and easy to carry, at least a lot easier than the 10 rd mags the 10/22 has.

The only negatives are there's no where near the aftermarket parts and customization options as the 10/22, the 25 round magazines are garbage, so you're stuck with the 10 rd mags. Also, the receiver is zamak.

For the use you're looking to do with it, it's a fine choice and really a 702 is capable of doing more than that.

I have the 25 round magazine and it works great (after I loaded it the first time with minor difficulty). It was a little over $20 and comes with a loader for it. I have shot several hundred rounds through mine with no malfunctions.

One more good review,,,

I bought mine about 9 years ago at Wal Mart for $109.95.

At the time extra mags were sold there for $9.95 each,,,
I bought four extras.

The rifle shoots just as tight a group as any other .22 rifle I own,,,
I know I had one fail to eject but that was when it was new.

I do keep it very clean and well oiled and have had no more problems.

Honestly, it rivals my CZ-512 for precision and reliability.

I called mine the Junkster. I could not get that thing to shoot straight even on a rest. I bought it new at Walley World for $89. I finally got frustrated with it and took it to a pawn shop and traded it on a Ruger 10/22 which shoots great. In the trade I lost $10, but was happy to be rid of the Junkster. Get a 10/22 or a Marlin 60.

I bought a 702 for my kids to plink with about 7 years ago. While it is not fancy, it has never had a malfunction. I was at Academy today, and they had 25 round magazines for it on the shelf. As a truck gun, it will definitely get the job done. I’ve upgraded the kids to Ruger 10-22’s in the past few years, but merely as a personal preference. There’s nothing wrong with the 702. Even at $130 you will get your money’s worth out of it.

Got mine for $110 at auction.

Got my plinkster at an auction for $110. It's a neat cammo model with the fancy forarm grip. The kids love to shoot it and the accuracy is pretty good. I don't think it runs as smoothly as my 10/22, but it's a great little gun for the money.

Life is good.

Buy a plinkster for $130, sell it for $75.
Buy a used Marlin and keep it.
Buy a 10/22, sink $900 in bling parts and gunsmithing, try to sell it for $600 and have friends laugh.
Buy a CZ bolt action, put a decent scope on it, be the envy of ever man you meet. Except that one dude Jens, who has the anshutz.
