1911 Magazines

I really don't like the magazines that came with my Springfield 1911. Any suggestions?? Do I go with the 8 round or stay with the 7? A place near me has the 8 round in stock. Any recommendations on the base pad ( polymer, aluminum or steel)? Thanks!

With a Steel framed 1911 I like Chip McCormick PowerMags. The extra power springs ensure that the next round is ready to go every time.

The only place I use the softer sprung Wilsons is aluminum framed pistols. The anti-tilt follower is easier on soft aluminum feedramps. But I'm starting to replace my Wilsons with Checkmate mags.

I use ramped barrels in my .45s, and like Wilson magazines for single stack.

(I use Para-Ord mags in the double-stack Para .45s with no issues.)

(Haven't tried Chip McCormick's yet...)

I'm pretty well sold on the Wilson Combat mags.
Made very well.
I believe I have the Tactical models.
You will not be sorry......

Wilson all the way!

I have a Springfield champion and mine hates just about anything thats not a GI mag or wilson. I prefer the wilsons.

My SA Loaded has 3-8 round CM Power Mags and 3-10 round Power Mags.

+1. You can buy more expensive mags than those Chip McCormicks, but you can't buy any that are more reliable. I bought a couple of Power Mags and Shooting Stars and they have been 100% reliable in my Springfield.

It's funny, but my buddy has Power Mags as well and he keeps jonesing for a Wilson Combat mag because "they are supposed to be the best." My response back to him is, "what will they do that the Chip McCormicks won't do?" He has no answer for that one as his McCormicks have been 100% reliable as well.

As far as 7 or 8 round mags, its your choice but there are no draw backs or advantages, other than an extra round, between the mags.

I've had occasional trouble with two Commanders and Chip McCormick magazines. Feed was reliable, but once in awhile the slide wouldn't lock back.

I changed the followers from the supplied V-shaped ones to Pachmyer round-top followers and the problem went away.

Of course, now the 8-rd magazines are 7-rd magazines...

I'm going to stick with Wilsons. I bought a double handful of 47D's from them and when I had probs with them with stock springs, they stepped right up and sent xtra power springs and have been running smooth ever since.

Wilson Combat 47D's. They are rebuildable and have been flawless for me.

Shop around else pay the 28$ per mag they typically go for. A lot of times, you can get 3-4 for $20-25 a piece used.

I've found that a lot of people buy a number of different mags, and when they find one that works, recommend it to everyone else. That makes sense, that you'd recommend the one that works. But, what about someone who has a choice of just about any mag, because they all work? What sort of design features are preferable?

I find that a mag with an extra power spring like a CMC PowerMag is more reliable in most pistols. For an aluminum frame pistol an anti-tilt follower is very important. Otherwise the follower can move forward and nick the soft aluminum feedramp.
