Cheap auction HD gun
For budget reasons I'm looking for a cheap home defense scattergun in the $200 range. There is an auction coming up in my area and the guns I've been considering are as follows: Winchester Model 12 and Model 1200, Remington model 11 (auto 5 clone) and a Remington model 4.
Would the old auto guns (Rem model 11 and model 4) take 2 3/4" OO buck/occasional slugs OK? I'd love a model 12 but they are iffy on the price I can pay... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Hellbent

Correction...I think? The "remington model 4" as the auction company calls it "looks" like an auto 5 but in a riot gun configuration... What is this thing really?
I think it's a model 11? Would this thing handle OO buck in 2 3/4"? and not blow up?

The model 11 would be a interesting HD gun, I have had several of them and for one reason or another let them go. I would look for one that does not have a full choke.
Model 4 shotgun? you stumped me. Model 12 I have seen several m-12's at the last gun show in that price range, not much finish left but still serviceable. Most at that price seem to have a cut down barrel and some form of POLY choke. Winchester 1400 is a good solid auto and would again work as a HD gun, try to find a less restricted barrel and $200 should do for the gun in good shape. Good Luck and find a jewel!

A 11/48 maybe.

Model 11/48 maybe. . .it was the transitional shotgun from the Browning-designed, Remington-produced Model 11 and the forthcoming 1100 semi-automatic. The old 11/48 had a distinct look to it. As for your ammunition concerns, shouldn't be a problem. A nice Winchester model 12 would be good with tactical buckshot. A semi-auto would likely need full power buckshot. |

SGB, I wish I did... I am just a devout believer in BANG for the buck and you will find out I only endorse products, tactics and theories I whole heartedly believe in. For the durability, functionality and cost the Mossberg family of shotguns is the only choice for my wallet.

You can pick up an H&R Pardner Pump, 18", 5 round tube, black for about $130-$150 at any Academy Sports and Outdoors. That's what I got to fill the HD shotgun hole until my wife will let me upgrade.

Yeah, I will admit that if I had noticed the "Made in China" mark I probably wouldn't have bought it. Unfortunately it was the first thing I saw when I took it out of the box at home. At the time I was looking for an immediate HD shotgun for around $200. As soon as I can make the numbers work I plan on upgrading to a Reminton 870. American made, and plenty of add-ons, althought the only thing I plan on doing is adding a shell holder on the stock, some low light or night sights, and maybe a flashlight. The 870 was what I originally wanted, but I found out the price had gone up a little since I was 18.

I don't make excuses for owning Norinco shotguns. They are a hell of a deal for the money and offer more than a 870 Express. I own a Pardner Protector and a Norinco 982 (ghost ring sights). I like them better than an 870. I also own a Mak 90 AK and they are excellent.
Remington H&R pays Hawk Ind to import the PP from China and backs them with their excellent warranty. This well made shotgun in this thread link is a Canada imported Norinco made shotgun. Basically the same shotgun as the Norinco 981 (bead sight) with the barrel ring lowered to the same location as on the 870. http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...d.php?t=278347 The $200 Norinco 982 with GRS is the best deal going in a tactical. The 7+1 tube ext is an add on. Metal trigger guard, Machined extractor & ejector thicker high carbon steel receiver, excellent set of ghost ring sights. My Norinco 982. I have had it for about 6 years and put thousands of rounds through it. Never a problem. It will cycle any brand ammo. Even the Winchester value packs that some 870 shotguns will choke on. It has a Vang Safety, Factory heat shield & forend, Laserlyte tri rail mount. One of my 7+1 tube ext I make for the 870 & Norinco shotguns. GC Last edited by MAX100; November 13, 2008 at 04:35 AM. |

I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing China or any particular brand. I've always heard really good things about Norinco. I just prefer American made is all.

You sound like in your post you are apologizing for buying a Pardner Pump. I don't worry about what anyone thinks; I buy what I want too.
Out the 11 firearms you listed that you own 2 are American made. GC Last edited by MAX100; November 13, 2008 at 06:11 AM. |
