The more you know, the less likely you are to carry in a manner that has the potential to maim you for life. There are no advantages to SOB carry that make up for the risks.

I have a SOB holster, but I place it somewhere else on my belt, nearer my strong hand.

As I know quite a lot about spinal cord injury, I can tell you that a fall onto your back, while carrying small of the back, is essentially setting yourself up for a lower lumbar (L4, L5) pars interarticularis fracture, or spondylitic spondylosisthesis with spinal canal compromise, and an acute Cauda Equina Syndrome.

So unless you fancy getting a spinal cord injury resulting in flaccid bladder with urinary retention, flaccid bowel, sexual dysfunction, and even paraplegia, I suggest you stay away from carrying small of the back

Back to the OP---You're not saying the gun went off because of the accident are you? It was just a hard hunk of metal driven right against the bone?

Center of back is not for me. I always feel vulnerable that someone could come behind me and grab my weapon without me having a visual of them. Nope... nice and comfy IWB in the front or in a shoulder holster in the winter.

I never liked SOB carry for the reason you stated.

I'm with JM, SOB is not even comfortable for me, and the danger of injuring my already screwed up back puts it out of the picture, not to mention the potential for paralysis.

Front at 10 or 11 o'clock while driving, 1 or 2 o'clock when not is quite comfortable for me, but nothing beats the fanny pack for travel. Mine has gone with me several times, now.

Sorry about your friend, he'll be in my prayers.

No. The poor guy was laying there, with ammo and the gun all over the place, and, he was concerned about the police, and, the fact he couldn't move. He declined having anyone move him, and, it probably saved his ability to move.
