Sure.

With the recoil of a 3" load, maybe it will leave both of you laying on the floor .

My primary defense shotgun will hold either 7 rounds of 3 inch or 8 rounds of 2 & 3/4. I personally decided to go with the additional round vs. the heavier load.

In my State they generally do not ask why you shot 'em eight times.

The magnums have more pellets, but they don't have any more velocity. The 3" shoots 15 00 pellets at 1225 fps, and the 2-3/4" shoots 9 00 pellets at 1325 fps. With a bit more kick.

Why not use 000 buck if you're going to go big?

I prefer faster follow-up shots (if necessary) with reduced recoil 00 buckshot..

If it doesn't make you flinch so bad you can't hit what you shoot at with it, it should work. It could slow you down some on your followup shots if you need to shoot again though.

All in all I've never really seen anything a 3" magnum load of 00 would do that a 2 3/4" load of 00 wouldn't do just as well, and most of the time the standard load will pattern better into the bargain too.

fwiw,

00 penetration

If anyone else lives in your house or you live in an apartment/condo setting you might want to research the penetration of those 00 loads.

I haven't tested it but have read that 00 will penetrate up to 5 sheets of 5/8 in. drywall. So in addition to your bad guy, you may wind up hitting loved ones or close neighbors.

Do yourself a favor and read up on the reduced recoil 00 Buck ammo that's available these days. Less recoil, less noise, less flash, faster followup shots.

How about the atomic hand grenade?

The tactical 00 will work just fine.

I wouldn't use anything more than regular 00 Buck intentionally.

No idea what a 3 inch kicks like... never needed them and since they are high dollar, they wouldn't get justified...

Definitely overkill. Even a 2 3/4 inch 00 buckshot load is going to kill someone almost instantly. You can't kill anyone deader than dead. By using the 3" magnums, you're getting less capacity and more recoil and getting nothing in return for it.

It feels like getting punched both in the shoulder and the jaw at the same time--and that's in my front-heavy 590A1 that has milder recoil than most other fixed-breech shotguns.

People seem nervous here to correct the commonly repeated error that standard and magnum shells have the same power. That one just has more pellets. Huh?

Magnum loads have alot more weight and a little slower speed. Yes, weight is linear and speed is exponential to energy but a 1/3rd increase in weight (and hit probability as well as wound channels) and a little slower speed is still a big net gain.

So, load 5+1 rounds of 3" magnums in your Mossberg 500 (yes, it takes five of standard OR magnum length American shells in the tube) and you have a devastatingly more potent arm than, let's say, a 4+1 870 for example).

Then again, you probably don't really need it...

000 3" Plated Buck I'd reserve for a Griz at short range.

Gehrhard, I don't see a lot of people saying the 3" shells don't have more power. I see a lot of people pointing out that the power advantage is offset by a recoil disadvantage, affecting follow-up shots, and that the 3" length often means one less shell in the magazine.

Not sure if the 2-3/4" is so ineffective that the 3" is worth the lost round or slower follow-up time.

3" means he'll train less, flinch more, and miss more.

I can tell you 2 3/4" 00 buck does the job. I had the uh, "pleasure" of reading some police reports of local PDs having to drop suspects with their stock
870's. 00 Buckshot is very effective.

customaquatics- do this: find your local bowling pin league, and shoot a couple of runs. Track your progress 3" vs 2 3/4". Let us know how you do.
