Pyrodex FF in 1858?

Just received my Pietta case hardened frame with checkered grips 1858 from Cabelas for Christmas. I have shot a navy 36 colt for years but never a 44. I am out of 3f however and was wondering if Pyrodex 2ff (not P) would be okay to shoot in the 58 and if so how many grains? It is all I have at the moment and am itching to get to the range.

I used Pryodex FFG in my Ruger with great results - actually more accurate at 100 yds for some reason than FFFG.
In an 1858 I'd use the same amount as FFFg - maybe 30 grs.

This is from an old Colt Industries pamphlet:
"FFG black powder is best for large and medium-size revolvers, and FFFG for the small pocket models, but any grade that is available will work reasonably well."

I've used Pyro RS for years in 58's. Actually I can't tell any difference between RS and P. I use 35 grs.

According to MEC in his book "Percussion Pistols", the powder normally used during the 1850s-60s is "rifle powder", AKA FFG

Well, I'm just adding to the string.

I'm pretty new to shooting a '58, but I've used a lot of Pyro RS (FFg), with #10 caps and have had no ignition problems at all. My '58 shoots nice groups with 25 gr. and a .454 ball.

Have fun.
