Mini vs AR loudness

Is it just me or is the mini 14 a lot louder than the AR, if both shooting the same ammo my mini seems 10x louder than my friends AR.

Mini 14's bark pretty loud. New shooters are usually intimidated to shoot mine until the realize there is very little recoil.

It depends on the muzzle device. Perceived loudness also depends on barrel length and how far the shooter is from the muzzle.

My AR with a brake seems a good but louder than a mini with the standard flash hider.

Got a nice muzzle brake/ flash suppressor on my mini 581. 21 inch barrel. Seems almost as loud as my 30 06. Also I've seen many post about how far the mini throws the brass, mine would throw it into the next zip code at first, now after about 500-600 rounds through it, it throws about 10-15, with no regular pattern. Sometimes it throws them forward, straight out or 45 degrees toward the rear, is this normal for a mini 14 581 series

I'm not sure about the erratic ejection, but a muzzle brake and flash suppressor actually serve quite opposite purposes and are not the same thing.

I'm not a fan of the Mini 14 and part of this is due to the erractic, overly exuberant ejection. It's plumb dangerous to be in a pickup cab when a Mini starts flinging brass in there.

My Mini (581) also throws bass pretty far and in a variety of directions. As long as the brass finds its way out I don't particularly care where it lands.

I have an AC556 and an AR - they sound the same to me. My Carbon-15 pistol appears to be slightly louder - probably because of short barrel and muzzle brake. Still, not that much difference.

Given the same barrel length, ammo and flash hider, muzzle brake, or whatever there is no reason for one to be any different than the other.

Many years ago, I took my mini 14 ranch rifle out to the rifle range. The only lane open was one lane to the left of the far right. I asked the guy on the far right lane to trade with me, but he said he liked where he was. I warned him that my rifle slung brass really bad, he said it would be fine. Well, after the third round of brass plunked him upside the head quite violently, he was begging me to trade lanes. Still makes me giggle after all these years.

I think it will mostly depend on the muzzle device, as others have stated. A brake will make the gun louder.

Very true. My AR-15 has a muzzle brake. Why it came with one, I don't know, since recoil is minimal.

I was shooting next to another guy who had an AR-15 with a flash suppressor. My rifle was noticeably louder than his.

To my ears the Mini 14 was not louder than the AR. The sound is different, probably because of the all steel receiver and the reciprocating charger handle, also steel. The AR sounds more like BOOM, the Ruger goes CLANK. This of course is perception not science.
