I just picked up a cherry 65-2, serial 7D65XXX. It is recessed, but it isn't pinned, which makes me think it was a late -2 transition gun, so probably 1980-1982. Does anyone have any more info?

When was this Model 13-1 made?
Hey all, I need a bit of help. I recently inherited a nice S&W Model 13-1, 4 inch barrel, serial numbers 286XX both on the frame and the cylinder swing-out, other markings F17, 3, B2, B5, N (in a triangle), J (in a circle).
I looked around quite a bit, I feel confident that this piece was produced between 1974 and 1977. Any additional precision on the date, or details which anyone happens to know, would be very welcome. Thanks in advance! |

S&W Model 38 serial number help
Hello, I am new to The Firing Line today, so please excuse and let me know if I violate any protocols. Found the forum while looking for serial number date, of manufacture.
I have a Model 38, serial number 1J22XXX that I would like to determine year of manufacture. I purchased it used several years ago, have the original blue box, not looking to sell. Thanks in advance for any courtesies extended, Jim Last edited by 32nd; February 22, 2015 at 03:56 PM. |

38 Special Revolver Serial Numbers
I was able to get my Grandfather's S/W revolver from my mom before she passed away. I would love to know the history of this gun to pass along to my sons and grandchildren, if I live that long, to know when this gun was made. The story I was told when I was a child was my grandfather bough this revolver for $25.00. I would love to know the time frame that his gun was made. The Serial number on the gun is S864XXX. If anyone one needs the other 3 digits please contact me directly. Lastly, although my grandfather bought this gun for $25.00, I wouldn't sell it for $25,000, in the event someone wants to but it, it's not for SALE!
Thanks, Rick |

You might want to post this in the S&W lookup thread in the revolver forum. A picture would also be helpful.

You have a Smith & Wesson Military & Police revolver made sometime shortly after WWII, 1945-1948.
List price the next year, 1949, was $55.50 so I assume Grandpa bought his second hand at some later date. |

If you contact the S&W historian Roy Jinks and send him this info along with $50, he will return a history letter on your revolver that gives you some information on the model itself and a production history of it, and then he will also include the date that S&W shipped it and where they sent it and he will also include the features that particular revolver was outfitted with when it was shipped. Expect 4-6 weeks to get this letter.
I did it for my 1921 version of the (basically) same revolver. Mine was shipped to a hardware store in Huntington, WV!

Last nite I picked up my new to me Model 19-3 serial # 9K16488. Like new in box w/ papers. Doesn't have the diamond cut insert stocks. All I can find is after 1968 and pre-1976? Born on date??

My book shows 9K1001-9K99999 is all 1976. Not before, not after, but 1976.
If it's like new and in the box with the papers and goodies, maybe you can justify the $50 for a Roy Jinks letter? I find the letter to be fascinating, not for the specific date quite so much, but especially for the part where he tells you where Smith & Wesson shipped the gun. I think that is really very cool.

Hello Everyone!
I have what I think is a S&W Model 19 .357 with a 2 1/2 barrel that I bought second hand in the mid 70's. Serial # 5K721XX. Can you tell me if it is a Model 19? Thanks! |

Serial number says it is a 1973 build date. For a gun of that vintage, the model number should be stamped on the frame where the yoke (which holds the cylinder and swings out) meets the frame when the cylinder is closed.
It should say Model 19-3.

Okay, thanks! I can see now where it says "Mod 19-3" So, I guess it is a 3 inch model. I don't get how it is a 3" since I've measured it several times and never even come close to 3". More like 2 3/8" actual.

Haha, no, the dash-3 does not reference barrel length. The dash-3 denotes an engineering change where S&W elected to call it a slightly different version than the previous version.
Engineering changes (dash numbers as we call them) simply do NOT fit any rigid system, S&W tends to change them when they wish and often not following precedent. Sometimes it is a head-scratcher. However, if you know a particular gun is a "model 19-3" then there are certain things associated with 19-3's that you can count on being evident on the revolver in question. Barrel length? Measure from the muzzle to the rearmost barrel that comes through the frame and meets the cylinder, that is your barrel length. 2.5" was available on the 19-3.
