I do need more info though. Is it a modern swing out cylinder revolver or one that the barrel tips down? If the barrel tips down (break top) does it have an exposed hammer or concealed? What is the exact chambering stamped on the side of the barrel and is it a 5 shot or 6? Jim |

Thanks for offering to help. The barrel tips down and the hammer is exposed. From what I've found for photos online it's something like a 3rd or 4th model. I don't recall finding the chambering but I looked and don't recall the number of cylinders. The attached grip is black. Thanks again!

A .32 Double Action 4th Model. SN's ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909. A .38 Double Action 3rd Model. SN's ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895. You'll need to find out the caliber (32 or 38) to know which model it is. Jim |

Thanks for the info Jim. Any thoughts on rough value for either? I'll have to determine caliber next time I visit. Thanks again!

Hello Jim.
I have a Model 66 Stainless .357 with serial #2K75XXX and a Model 36 .38 Chief's Special 48JXXX. The Special is in the original box, a set of both Mother of Pearl(?) and wood grips, with all paper work and bore brush. I would appreciate any info you may give me. The storied history I mentioned earlier...... One other thing...the .32 S&W Long and the .22 Lady Smith that you dated for me two pages back were given to me by the widow of a grandnephew of Sarah Louisa Shull, Sarah ran away from the area with the local sheriff in the late 1800's (he was married, she was not), and later joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and toured with him for years, until shortly before the show's demise in 1913. Allegedly, both revolvers were hers, along with a Crackshot Rolling Block .22 single shot rifle. That is the "Storied History", or legend, as it was told to me 9 years ago. The weapons were the property of the grandnephew until he passed away in 2004. He was a great friend and died at the young age of 76. Thanks, Tinman Last edited by tinman2; November 3, 2012 at 06:25 PM. |

Hi al, I am new to the forum, as I am also new to smith & wesson revolvers - I have recently acquired one and would like to know more about its history - it is model 65-3, stainless steel, 3" barrel. Serial nr. is ANS46XX, could anyone tell me more about it? I have only found out it is produced later then 1981... Thanks for any help!

Production ran from 1972 to 2004. It's the stainless steel version of the model 13. Quote:

Hi, I'm a fairly new dealer in Reno, NV and someone just came in a sold me a S&W Pre 27 (I think) .357 Magnum. I was hoping someone might be able to verify with the serial number? I'm no expert just yet but I'm hoping to learn and really hope my gamble paid off. I'll buy the book mentioned above but I need to find out asap if this is worth it. If possible it would be great to get a rough estimate of value of a 90% blue finish gun.
Thanks is advance! Serial is: S 1097xx |

While it is refered to as a pre 27, it was simply called the 357 Magnum at the time as it was the only one made. In 1957 S&W began assigning model numbers and it became the model 27. Value depends heavily on condition, finish and barrel length with nickel and 3.5" barrel bringing the most money. For a standard 6.5" blued in 90% with original grips I would guess about $800+. Jim |

laytonj1, thanks for looking that up. It is a 3.5" barell and a glossy dark blue finish and does appear to be the original handle on it. Would that still be in the $800 range? I know its hard to give an exact value but a ball park is all I need. thanks for all your help.

Need info on a s & w 38 revolver
This revolver belonged to my Dad. The serial number is 785607. I've been told this could be a gun shipped to England prior to USA getting involved in WW II. There are British crown marks on the barrell and each chamber also. 3 1/2 barrell. Have been unable to find info locally where I live and my knowledge of firearms is very limited. Thanks in advance.

S&W dates
This has got to be one of the best post ever. Just picked up a 686-6 this afternoon. Used, but in the box with all paperwork, etc. 6" with ported barrel. Now if I just knew the date of birth. Serial #CJR9XXX. Any help would be appreciated.

You can get the DOB for your gun over the phone free from S&W's customer service. That said, it's likely 2005. Jim |
