I received this revolver from my grandpa when he passed. I just want to know what year it was made. Or anything about it.
It's a J frame made sometime in the mid 1960s. It should have a model number stamped inside the yoke cut.

1972-1974, and most likely 1973 since it's in the middle of the N60,001 – N190,000 range.

Smith & Wesson pre K?

Need some help in IDing this nice S & W .22 revolver.

No model number on it anywhere, only K 9XXX on bottom of butt frame.

If it's a "K" followed by four digits, it dates to 1947. If it's K9xxxx, it's 1950.

Thanks for the information on the K plus four digits. I had always been told it was pre-WWII. Pre K? But what is the model of this revolver? Could it possibly be a Prewar K-22 Combat Master Piece. Note the shape of the grip. It looks more like that than the Model 17 (K-22) introduced in 1946.

No, it's a postwar K-22 Target Masterpiece. A prewar gun would have:

1) Tapered-top non-Magna walnut stocks with gold or silver medallions. Granted, stocks can be swapped. However, if it were prewar, it would also have...

2) A long-action "hump back" hammer. The hammer in the picture is clearly a short-action hammer.

3) A smaller non-micrometer rear sight. The big adjustment screw gives yours away as a postwar micrometer sight.

4) A smaller-diameter barrel with a more tapered profile.

FWIW the prewar name of this gun was the K-22 Outdoorsman. Here's a thread from the S&W forum with some good pictures of a correct one:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/for...603#3351072603

BTW don't be upset that it's not actually prewar because the early postwar K-22s are quite sought after. They have sharply climbed in value just in the past year or so.

FWIW a Combat Masterpiece has a 4" barrel with a Baughman Quick Draw ramp front sight rather than a 6" barrel with a Patridge front sight.

Thanks for defining what I have. Much appreciated. I bought it from my brother in law along with a commercial Colt 1911A1 for 5 bills. I guess I got a great deal.

date info on older S&W

I have a 4" 38 that was my dad's NYPD service pistol. Since he started in the 50's, I am assuming it dates from that time frame. Anything more specific is greatly appreciated.

The serial number on the bottom of the butt is C132XXX
There is a 5 digit number inside the crane, but no model number
There is another serial number on the backstrap, (I'm assuming it is a NYPD serial/issue number)

I'm not sure if NYPD used model 10 or similar.

Thanks!

1981. Model 41's are great guns.

C1 to C223998 were made from 1948-51.

OK, BNP. British Nitro Proof, so it was definitely in Britain.

I THINK the SP stands for Special Proof... Hum... maybe not. Something I just found on line says that SP was used until 1925 and was a voluntary black powder proof. I don't know why it would have been used on a gun made well after WW II, unless it's because the .38 Spl. was once available with black powder loads...

The other ones I'm not familiar with.

Not particularly collectible in the 'States, dunno the market in Canada at all.

The Brits sure do doodle all over imported guns, don't they?

My question is to the folks who manage to get those great close-up pictures to post. I have a CanonA620, and the closest I seem to be able to get is three feet away before things get blurry. What's the secret to being able to get pics of serial numbers, inside the barrels, etc??

Thanks for any help!

^ Try looking for the setting with the rose on it (meaning close-up) and then you'll have to set the camera on a still object (tripod, desk, table etc) Good luck.

I just bought a S&W 357 Mag. I don't know much about it. It was a Highway patrol gun. (something along those lines. The gun is at Cabelas still)
The SN# is AJK3XXX. any info would be great.

Oneounce,

Look in your manual for instructions on how to enable the macro setting.

According to what I'm reading, with the macro setting enabled you can focus in as close as 1 centimeter.

That's more than close enough to get good, crisp pictures.

Looks like 1985 or '86. Does it say "Highway Patrolman" on the side of the barrel?

Tamara,
Thanks for the quick reply.
On the barrel, it does say something about Highway Patrol. I don't remember exactly what it read. But the guy at Cabelas saw it and said it belonged to a former police officer, and then showed me where it was factory stamped into the barrel.

Tamara,
I was looking on your links (from your sig) and the S&W you have there looks almost identical to the one I'm buying. without the Thunder Ranch badge, and it has rubber grips.
