Trying to ID .308 rifle

My g/f has a handed down .308 rifle that's been sitting in my gun safe for about a year. Curious, I took it out tonight to see what it was all about.

On the barrel there is a stamp... "MORTON"
Near the breach it reads Deutsche Waffen-Und Munitionsfabriken Berlin.

It's scoped with an old 4x Redfield so if there are marks underneath the mount I'm not sure. I attached some pics... any ideas?

You have a Mauser 98 action that has been customized at some point in its life. DWM was founded in 1896, uniting the remnants of the old Mauser Werke that Loewe bought and joined up with their ammunition business. DWM was absorbed by the Quandt Group in 1929 when Jewish businesses were denied government contracts.

MORETON is probably the name of a gunsmith who installed the barrel. It looks like it was struck repeatedly, and never well. The stock looks like a Bishop stock, and is typical of any number of aftermarket stocks available from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Never try to educate someone who resists knowledge at all costs.
But what do I know?
