mossberg forend light mounting options

im looking for an economical and reliable way to mount a light on the forend without having to buy either a dedicated gun light or the surefire forend. im interested in purchasing a surefire flashlight but would like to be able to remove the light for carrying around and other tasks. im thinking a small rail with a clamp setup. anyone have ideas or pics? thanks

Here is an inexpensive solution. A BMT clamp with a rail ($43, sometimes on sale for less) a G2 light ($35 on eBay), an R2 LED conversion ($10), Misc scope ring. ($??). It eliminates the coil cord by mounting the light over the forend within easy reach of the thumb. The light can be turned on by pressure from the thumb or twisted on permanently so you don't have to keep holding the switch. Nice options to have available.

candewman: thats the exact setup i want. looks great. i plan on buying a surefire g2 today and will order the led upgrade. that clamp looks perfect. i checked your site but saw that they are not available for a mossberg 590. do you know when this will be available?

The one that is shown is a BMT (barrel/magazine tube) clamp and it is currently not being made for the 590. There will be an MT (magazine tube) model coming out of the shop next week that should work on the 590. It holds the light in the same position as the BMT only it doesn't grab the barrel. You don't need it to do that on the 590 anyway. Should be around $37.

I attached my light to the pump grip with duct tape. It allows for the recoil of the gun to be dampened through seperate parts and the plastic of the grip so the flashlight will not endure much punishment.

the MT clamp looks like a good choice also. is there something that keeps this clamp from sliding or rotating under recoil once something is attached like a flashlight?

The way the clamp is designed, it won't rotate past the barrel. There is a curve there so that if, a big if, the clamp does rotate, it won't be much because it will rest on the barrel. As for sliding, the clamp is designed as a near full 360 degree grip on the mag tube, way more than the typical "inverted V pipe clamp" types you find. There is a lot of surface tension there to stop movement. This clamp also has a steel helicoil insert and a bevel screw to help grip the clamp closed and not come loose under recoil. Most clamps just have bolts going into anodized aluminum threads. All in all it should be a very sturdy, well built clamp that will suit your needs.
