38 Super to 9X25?

Would it be safe to convert a 38 Super 1911 barrel to 9X25?

I am not sure a 1911 has a large enough port to chamber and eject a 9X25 cartridge, and I am not sure a 9X25 will fit into a 1911 magazine. Then you also have the issue of modifying the slide and the ejector for the smaller case head. I remember Colt had some issues when they made the Delta Elite in 10mm. Since the 9X25 is based on the 10mm case, it may be wiser to start with a pistol designed for the 10 mm, maybe even a Colt Delta Elite if you prefer the 1911 platform.

Yeah, you should be able to rechamber that.

As far as OAL I'm pretty sure it'll work, as I seem to recall Robby Leatham shooting a 1911 in that 9x25 for a season or two.

I'm not trying to convert a 38 Super 1911 to a 9X25, I'm looking to get a barrel in 9X25 for my 10mm Kimber but I can't find anyone who makes one so I was hoping I could just ream out a 38 Super or 9mm barrel. I believe 9X25 has about the same OAL as a 10mm so it should fit the gun.

I'd be interested to hear your experiences once you get it done- it's supposed to be really effective with a comp.

Nowlin says they will do special orders in 9x25. Probably no more expensive than having a .38 barrel rechambered unless you find a shop already with the reamer.

I had considered talking to Nowlin, and probably should, but I already have a 38 Super barrel that I could use. Thanks for the input and advice. I'll be sure to post my results when I figure out what I'm doing and can get around to doing it.

Just an update for anyone who is interested, I got a 9X25 barrel from Nowlin, put an EGW comp on it. It shoots phenomenally. Almost no recoil. It is really loud and has quite the muzzle flash though. I'll post pictures when it gets prettied up a little bit.

Just curious, but how did you guys who did that conversion get around the short magazine and mag well? I have seen an M1911A1 converted to 7.62x25 by the Viet Cong, and it took a lot of filing work and a home-made magazine, plus work on the slide and extractor and the ejector (which would not be needed for conversion of a .38 Super).

It wasn't an issue. The OAL of the 9X25 is the same as the 10mm. All we did was replace the barrel.

Sorry, I really misread things and got myself even more confused than normal.
