I stick it in my pocket and see how it fits. On a pocket gun I also prefer a gun with an internal hammer to decrease the chances of it snagging when attempting a draw.

It has already been mentioned, but honestly the only answer is to put it in your pocket. And of course it will vary by pants

...or do what I did. I just bought, sold and traded a couple dozen guns over the course of 20 years and now have a small assortment to choose from.
Sounds familiar, but I did it in about ten years.

For me, a j-frame is just a bit "long" (front-to rear) and the grip wants to peek out. This is true in all of my jeans and most of my shorts. Dressier slacks sometimes have deeper pockets, which swallowed the whole thing, but that only allowed carry wearing certain pants.

My LCP or PM9 are a good bit "shorter" front-to rear and fit in the front pocket of any of my slacks, jeans, shorts, etc. LCP will also fit in back pocket of all. I have also carried my Kahr P45 and a 3" 1911 in front pocket, but I consider either far more suited to IWB.

It should go without saying that regardless of the handgun, a pocket holster is a must. A DeSantis Nemesis made for mini-Glocks can accommodate a variety of handguns, including all of the ones mentioned in this post.

Be sure to sit and squat down to see what the gun does. In the wrong pocket, a gun can just slide right out. When I try on trousers I also put my CCW in the pocket, then move around & sit to check it out; I've passed on more than one pair because the CCW wouldn't ride right.

As a rule, I stick with slacks or loose cargo pants. 'Relaxed-fit' jeans can work as well. Tight pants are out!

If I can hide it by my hand, it's small enough to disappear into a pocket. Otherwise, it's too big. a larger gun may fit into a pocket, but I don't call it a pocket gun. Then; it's a pocket bulge.

As noted, it is as simple as trying it out for the given pocket. It has to fit and conceal reasonably well. Don't forget that part of fitting is the ability to produce it on demand.

A J-frame hides pretty well in a big or loose pocket, but my LCP in a back pocket is the only gun that works well in every case, at least for me. Note, the LCP is quite a bit smaller than the LC9 or any of the pocket 9's, with the possible exception of the Rohrbaugh (haven't seen one of those).

I've looked at the pocket .380s, such as the P3AT, but they are too small for me to confidently grip with my average/large hand.

It's all weight and size...and you need to handle the gun to determine if it's suitable for your use...Rod
