how to bend shotgun magazine spring?
I am installing a new spring in a shotgun.
How do I bend the ends of the spring so they lay flat? |

I turn the end tips into center of diameter then with 2 pairs of needle nose, I hold with one and tweak the tip into the spring a bit...
But I do not think you need to worry unless the ends are askew... With the way the spring fits in the shell follower, it sould settle in fine... I AM NO SMITH SO THIS ADVICE IS WORTH WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT!!! Brent |

The ends don't need to be "bent flat" - just drop the spring down into the mag tube against the inside of the cupped follower, compress the forward/free end into the tube & install the end cap.

Agreed---you don't need to mess with it.
If you ever DO need to get the last turn on a spring to lay flat--say a cut down recoil spring or something-- Heat a flat piece of steel to red, press the end of the spring against it. that last coil will heat and bend flat without screwing up the temper of the rest of the spring. |

Thanks for the more proper way to do this... I will try to remember it next time a spring needs such...
I reckon for a light wire spring like a mag tube spring, you could just do this on a conventional electric range burner on high? Brent |
