Any HK (only wildcard for me is the VP40 as have no experience with it.)

Pretty much any hammer fired classic SIG and the SIGPro.

Sig 229.

More accurate than any Smith 4006

... and just as reliable.

Owning three S&W 3rd Gen pistols, I can tell you that parts are getting scarce which makes it harder to want to shoot them.

Supposedly Numrich Corp acquired all of Smith's remaining parts for its 3rd Gen semiauto pistols. But whether you'll be able to get the specific part you need if something breaks is just a guess, ... or the triumph of hope over experience.

Although I wouldn't refer to it as a poor man's Sig, I would second the SP2022.
I don't know if you'd call a polymer handgun different but they are inexpensive, reliable and darn accurate.
I have one in 9mm and 40 S&W and love them both.
The attached pic is from my last range trip and the best of my 5 shot groups at 20 yards and open sights.
With my 65 year old eyes I'd have to say it's more accurate than I am.

Unless I missed it... only one mention for FN? They make excellent pistols, and if it wasn't Glock or Smith, I would pick FN

Springfield XD40 and XDm Compact have both been reliable and handle recoil better than Glock. Ditto for Beretta Px4, including the Compact which still has the rotating barrel, and also Smith M & P Compact, Gen 1. All are better in .40 caliber than the equivalent Glocks.

All the incessant worry about 3rd Gen parts availability?!

A) they made a ZILLION of these and by & large, most parts swap between common models

B) these guns, especially the steel frame models like the 4006 hardly ever break or need repair

C) if you are talking about spending as little as $400, do you really have to plan out the next 20 years of possible usage and wear? Really? If you spend cash on ONE box of ammo to feed a 4006 just once a month, in 3 years you've spent more on ammo than you did on the $400 used gun.

Go wear out a 5906, 4006 or 4506 before you cry yourself to sleep at night worrying over PARTS, sheesh.

I don't know that people are crying themselves to sleep. I think they're simply pointing out that parts aren't as readily available as they once were, and it might be something to keep in mind.

I got my .40, my first one, a year or two ago.

It's one of the S&W valuelines, the 410. It's now out of production.

Nice handgun, but my only complaint is that it shoots low for me no matter what I'm running through it.

I got it to be my living room gun, though, so that's not such a huge deal.

Unfortunately, I ran into some issues finding spare magazines for my 410. S&W stopped making them, and no one else was supporting them.

Someone sent me a link for a handgun magazine website and they had some very good prices on used S&W mags. I got 3, so I should be good for a long, long time.

As for other parts, I don't know, but I've heard that the valueline pistols generally don't share a lot of parts with the Third Gen guns.

Were I looking for a .40 that was not a Glock my money would buy a police trade in da/sa (I dont like DAK) Sig p229 or 226. Hands down, no question.

I have to talk myself out of buying one almost weekly, saving for the new P229 SAO legion supposedly shipping this summer, or I'd have a trade in P229

Not much heavier then a 9mm, the CZ 75 in forty is an outstanding and reliable handgun with some heft for target shooting. Put a 20 pound spring in it and shoot the heck out of it. The browning hi power is discontinued. You can also buy a 10mm 1911 and a barrel for 40.

I have a Stoeger 8040 I will NEVER part with. It's comfortable, accurate, perfect grip, sexy like a good Italian woman. They stopped making them this year but there should be stock somewhere. Paid $389 for mine and it's easily the best gun I ever bought next to my Ruger Security-Six.

Next choice would be a Springfield XD. I like a manual safety and their grip safety is close enough.

Rhino revolvers are made in .40 as well, there’s few revolvers out there. But I’d go with a Jericho 941. Oddly enough Action Express made .41 AE which was slightly hotter than the .40 and several years earlier. Load data for both now are printed as the same . The Jericho 941 and Uzi had the .41 AE had the round first and a few conversion kits for other guns were made. So if you want a weird 40 S&W then go to cartridge it mimicked. The only disadvantage the 41 AE had was making brass. The rebated rim turns lots of new brass into scrap. I think it was too ahead of it’s time as well. But it’s obsolete today and it’s reloads or buying original ammo. So I say a Jericho 941 in 40 S&W. I’ve got one in 9mm from the ‘90s and it’s great. Mine is all steel and 15+1. The 40s hold a few less. I want a .41AE kit.

Let's get serious ... Rhino revolvers are junk.

Just get a 10mm on the 1911-platform, and then have a spare .40S&W barrel fitted. Trust me, it's the most NOT Glock you'll ever have.

Plus, you'll have 2-guns-in-1 with just a barrel swap. Easy peasy.
