Strange looking 8mm neck bulge
I just started reloading and saving my brass for my k98k and noticed the strange bulging in the necks. Could this make the rifle unsafe to fire? Sorry for the low quality of the pics.

That is pretty strange. I would have a gunsmith check out the chamber, just to be safe.

looks like there's a gouge in the chamber. Take it to a smithy

I was able to get my phone in close enough to snap a pic and yeah there is a gouge in the chamber. Is there anything that can be done about this?

Unless it's making extraction difficult, my take is that the only ill effect is it will shorten the life of your brass.
I'd be tempted to do nothing at all.

It extracts just fine so at this point I guess Ill do nothing. Maybe Ill start keeping a lookout for cheap sporters with nice bores . Thanks for all your comments on this, was much appreciated!

Cole Distributing has post-war Norwegian made 98K barrels in 7.62 NATO that match the step contour so everything fits as original, sights, stock & all. Above average quality for about $100.00. Never shot an original 8mm K that would match it for accuracy. I shoot and load for an M1A so I can feed it without going to the store.

If it does extract , setting back the barrel and rechambering would be the repair.

Just a guess, someone drilled out a stuck case and went too far, in the old days there was a chisel called 'cape'. As long as the parent metal was straight and smooth, no problem, BUT! when there was a reduction in the diameter the cape chisel dug in.
