Spotting scope

I have exactly zero experience with spotting scopes so don't mind my ignorance, I've only shot longer distances on military ranges with someone in the pits! Looking for a spotting scope so I don't have to call a cease fire and run downrange every five minutes at my local range. I want to be able to see .223 rounds on paper at 200 yards. what magnification would I need? What brands should I look at? Don't need a fancy one or a tough one, just a cheap one to see little holes.

I'm not sure if I can answer your question, but one thing I can tell you is that magnification is useless without enough light. That being said, I wouldn't expect that any 50mm objective scope will show you .223 holes at 200 yds ... no matter what magnification it might posess. If the larger objectives are out of your price range, you might consider getting a 20x50 and using the "Shoot-n-See" targets that show a mark that is bigger than your bullet hole.

I like my Burris Landmark 20-60x80mm. Big objective; works well. Most spotters are 45x max (if that) and 60 or 65mm objective, and beyond that you normally pay a lot more. But this Burris seems like a nice scope at $249 or less at some places. It is BIG however. You should be able to see .223 holes at 200 yds on 60 power, but I wouldn't say EASILY, unless conditions are really bright, or you're using shoot-n-c type of paper.
