Beretta 84 mag question

Beretta 84 mag question
Just picked up a used (like new) 84. It did not have the box so I unsure of the exact model. It came with two 10rd mags. Will the 13 round mags fit? Is this just a California model? If so where is a good place to get cheap 13 rounders?

The model is stamped on the gun, (84B, 84f, 84fs), but the mags, either 10 or 13 rounds, will fit all models. Try CDNN for Beretta mags. They usually have good prices. Google it... use your computer to search.

I don't know any good cheap brands, but I got a blued 13-round magazine from Mec-Gar for $30. The fit, finish and function are all perfect, and I didn't feel it was too much to pay for a reliable magazine.

EDIT: Evidently, the prices have dropped! CDNN has the same blued Mec-Gar magazines for $20. If you can get Mec-Gar for $20, I wouldn't even bother trying to find anything cheaper.

FWIW I have seen cheap European police surplus factory magazines for these pistols from time to time, but I am unaware of anyplace you can buy them today.

Also, at the risk of stating the obvious...

The Beretta 85 & 86 take an 8rd single stack magazine. These are not compatible with the 84.
The Browning BDA .380 (but not the BDA 9 & 45!) is internally identical to the Beretta 84 and takes the same mags.

Perhaps. More likely it was sold while the national AWB was still in force. At any rate, the standard 13rd mags will work in any 84 / BDA .380.

Cheap clone 84 mags tend to break the top rail of the mag so it bows slightly out and misfeeds if fully loaded. Mecgars and Beretta mags are thicker metal and don't do this.

I highly recommend getting good mags for your 84. If it will take 10, it will take a 13 rnder.

Mec-Gar, BTW, makes the mags for Beretta. The two are essentially identical in construction.

I know this is an old thread but I'm looking for ten round Cheetah 84 mags. Who has those? Everything I'm seeing online is for 13 rounds and Massachusetts guns have a 10 round limit.

I think my LGS has some of the Beretta 10 round mags still new in the wrapper. Plus you should post a WTB add in the buy,sell,trade area not on the end of a dead thread lol.

I bought several 13 round mags from Numrich (gun parts inc.) for about $17 each. They were new mecgars still in the package. Didnt look to see if they had 10 rounders.

Too bad you didn't ask this question in 2012 when this thread got going, because IIRC Numrich had 10-round factory mags for ~$17/ea at the time... but no more.

I speculate that they bought out some distributor who had bought way too many during the AWB, and was desperate enough to sell them that they took pennies on the dollar. However, they're apparently all sold out now.

FWIW Beretta is known for periodic supply droughts on stuff related to their smaller-caliber pistols, sometimes including the pistols themselves. You have to stock up when the gettin's good.

Chris, I do not remember the AWB having anything to do with pistol magazine capacity? I know individual states limited volume but not Clinton's AWB. I was in law enforcement at the time and being exempt maybe I just missed that issue. My 84 came with a Beretta mag made by McGar, I purchased a second from Brownells and it too is a Mc Garr.

Yep the ban was all about mag limits, I recall Glock "hi-cap" mags going for $70-80 each here is SC.

Smee, I'm sure you guys are correct, I retired from a PD in Calif and even then magazines were restricted and the ban never lifted but I was remembering guys buying Hi caps disassembled from points outside the state as they were " repair parts" even after the AWB was dumped. Upon retirement I did not walk but ran from the idiots in charge there.
Odd but today I am more comfortable with my single stack pistols and am not concerned with mag capacity, even my pile of AR's have mostly 20 Rd magpuls to feed them.
