Pics and a Question: New Rem 870 Police
Wooooooooooot!
My new Remington 870 Police model arrived today. I haven't shot it or even cleaned it yet -- but had to post pics. Crazy, eh? But I love it already. I love wood, even on a HD gun. It's the #4903 with walnut furniture, parkerized finish, 18" barrel, extended mag (6+1), bead sight and R3 LimbSaver recoil pad. I'll probably keep it fairly stock -- maybe change the sights one day. Okay, pics attached and a question below. Sorry for the crummy photos. Question: I ordered this out of State to my local FFL agent and expected cosmoline all over this thing but when I opened the box, the outside appears dry as a bone. Inside the action and barrel are nicely lubed. Is this normal for the police models? Not that I'm complaining -- just asking out of curiosity. |

Oh yeah, couple wood pics
Sorry, I wish the photos were better, as the wood is pretty nice. Should look good once cleaned up a bit.

NICE!!! I got one of those for Christmas, blue finish and 4 shell tube. You have the full length tube and it is a parkerized gun. Those things are so nice. Smooth pump action Is that an 18 inch barrel or 20 inch barrel? 8 shot or 7 shot?
As to your question: I don't know as I never have ordered a gun out of state. Sorry Here's mine |

Nice blued version you have there, Doug. I did consider the blued finish but went with parkerized. To answer your question, its the 18" barrel with extended mag and holds 7 rounds (6 plus one in the chamber).

There nice shotguns. I purchased one last summer.
You sure it is a R3 Limbsaver. It does not look like mine. Plus I was told the walnut were not available with the Limbsaver. This may have changed tho. Good looking shotty. Regards, Chard |

Chard, it says "LimbSaver" on it -- sorta molded into the end of it. I don't have a "regular" LimbSaver so I have nothing to compare it to. But this Remington version is definitely made by the LimbSaver folks. What's different about yours? Now you've got me curious.

Remington used to spray their Police guns, inside and out, with hot cosmoline.
I think the Remington Law Enforcement web site still has instructions to disassemble the gun and spray it dripping wet with Rem-Oil to dissolve the cosmoline and replace it with Rem-Oil to prevent rust. Apparently, Remington discontinued the cosmoline spray several years ago. I think that if you measure your new Police model, you'll find the barrel is actually 18 1/2" long. About a year ago, Remington changed their Police guns to barrels 1/2" longer. The older guns allows the extension to stick out beyond the barrel as a bayonet mount. About a year ago, they lengthened the barrels so the extension was even with the muzzle. |

the manuel that came with mine says it's an 18 inch, but I haven't measured it. The store that sold it to dad told him it was an 18 inch. I don't know exactly how old mine is. Serial # is A81743##M
http://www.remingtonle.com/shotguns/870standard.htm Remington's website for the 870 still says 18 or 20 inch only |

My 870P 4407 (purchased in Oct of last year) came without any cosmoline and was dry like you indicated. I called Remington to confirm this was normal and they said they don't use cosmoline anymore.

I inserted a cleaning rod into my barrel (dunno if that's even vaguely an accurate method of determining barrel length ) but it measured 18.5-inches.
As someone else pointed out -- Remington labels these as 18-inch in its literature. Frankly, it doesn't matter to me and lots of people just round it down. I typed 18" in my original post -- but strictly speaking -- yep, its probably an 18.5-inch barrel. |

Gentlemen,
I gave my 870 HD to my Marine son, and it is in his safe while he's entering his 3rd year in the Corps. I want one for myself, specifically the Police model (I am a retired police officer), parkerized, bead front sight, wood stock. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure as to how much one would be? I appreciate your attention on this. Semper fi, Dave Swaffield |

Dave, that sounds like the exact version I purchased (#4903). I bought mine from GT Distributors (www.gtdist.com) for $475.95 plus $23.50 shipping. It was one of the best prices I could find and they don't charge extra for credit card. It didn't apply to me, but they charge tax in the following states, see cut-and-paste from their site below.
p.s. I'm in no way affiliated with this company, just a happy customer. Good luck in your search. We are obligated to charge Tax in the following states. TX (8.25%) GA (7%) TN (9.25%) KY (6%) |

I got mine at www.gtdist.com too. They had the best overall price (shipping and no fee for credit card) I could find for my 4407.

Gentlemen,
I solved my 870 riot gun problem. A federal employee came over to my place yesterday evening and brought me an 870 Remington riot gun, 18" barrel, bead front sight, parkerized/wood for $200. He also brought 50 rounds of OO buck, 25 rounds of W-W slugs, and 150 rounds of #7-1/2 to just fool around with. This guy takes good care of me, a great friend. Thanks for your previous responses. akr: Thanks, I'm really happy with this shotgun. I just bought a hundred box of Federal Premium LE Tactical 00 buckshot, it's the low recoil stuff. Never used that and plan on having some fun shortly. Yeee-owwww.
Dave: I could use a friend like that one of yours. Send him over, will ya? Tell him to bring me a FN FAL. Thanks. |

I have this same shotgun and ran it through an Awerbuck shotgun course. I added a 4 round side saddle, Surefire light, and Scattergun Tech sights to mine. Accuracy with slugs was amazing (a cloverleaf at 25 yards on the first day) and it runs no matter what.
