.223 Bullet question

The search function turns up http://www.goldenwestbrass.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=11 as an inexpensive 55 grain FMJ bullet. Has anyone loaded and shot this particular bullet? New to reloading rifle but I am looking for an economical (I am cheap ) round to learn on. The rifle is a Colt LE6920 AR in .223 with 1/7 twist and bone stock - no mods.

I ordered the various items for case conditioning and now will be using the search function for good recipes and powders. So far, I have found AA 2015, Benchmark, H335, H4895, TAC all tend to be good with 55 grain bullets. A lot of folks swear by H335 as a, more or less, standard.

I have the Lyman 49th edition reloading manual plus ABCs of Reloading and will probably stop by Cabelas to see what else they have. Of course, the Hogdgon website is very useful.

Thank you in advance

Let me throw another in the mix, Win 748...
You will do great with any of them.
I like the ball powders for ease of metering,
You might do better with 63 grain pills though. (1/7 twist)

Ok, I will add that to my list as I search the internet for advice.

I took a drive to Cabelas and they don't have much. The only one on the list was H4895 but I am not ready to buy yet. Still have to settle on the bullet issue.

To the unknowing like me, how does one determine if it is ball or not? Read the label? It was suggested on my other post that ball would meter better through my Lee set-up.

Thank you.

WW-748, H-335, BL-C(2), H-380, TAC as all of RamShot’s powders are ball.
For bulk loading I use WW748 Or TAC.
If I’m going for Tight groups with a varmet barrel I use Varget....Much slower loading
Though.

I have loaded the GW 55 gr bullet and it shoots fine in my M16 and Ruger Ranch. No feed problems and good accuracy with H-335 powder. I also have a lot of old Hogdon MR223 powder I use with the 55 gr and it also shoots fine. I was shooting this afternoon with my Ruger and was getting 2 inch groups at 100 yards, which is not too bad for open sights. At least it's good enough for me. I suspect the rifle shoots better than I do.

Thank you. I read lots of reports that H335 is almost one of the "standby" powders that many use, especially for light bullets. A couple of reloading articles reiterated that too.

Thanks again.

Hey Grumpa,
I need to correct my self a little. H-335 is not a true
ball powder but rather kinda squshed "gritty". Still
though, It meters well.

I don't know what quantity of bullets you intend to purchase, but you can do a little better on price than those.

"squashed gritty". Is that one of those technical terms that you see on sites where only the techies visit?

Thank you

Jepp2. You said "I don't know what quantity of bullets you intend to purchase, but you can do a little better on price than those." For strictly paper punching and teaching my wife to shoot, can you give me an example where the prices are better? Fwiw, I am talking about 1000 +/- so that I can learn to reload rifle as well as give me plinking time. Not long distance, not scoped, just open sights or holographic red dot stuff.

Thanks.
