Reloading 45 ACP 230 gr.RN

Looking for a good target load for a 230 gr. Not to hot just punching holes. I have load books, just looking for what your pet loads are.

Mine....I use Montana Gold 230gr RN bullets / Hodgdon TiteGroup powder ( 4.4 grains ) where min is 4.4 gr and max is 4.8grains / and CCI primers. Its been a very good load for me ....and I've easily fired 20,000 or more reloads in .45 acp in last 4 or 5 yrs with the same specs.

I've had good luck with locally produced 230 gr. LRN bullets and 4.7 gr. of Titegroup. That's a near-max load, so you might want to tone it down a bit, or at least work up to it, but it's worked well in both my Ruger P345 and .45ACP S&W Model 22-4 revolver.

This same load also works well as a milder load for 185 gr. bullets in the same guns. No function issues at all in the semi-auto. Revolver loads can go quite a bit lighter, but may not work well in a semi-auto.

Mild and accurate in my Chow 1911 wad gun.

4.3gr of Universal under a Lee 452-230-1r mold. Very mild, low recoil, great for IDPA.

5.0 gr W231, 230 gr Hornady FMJ RN projectile, OAL 1.255", FC or Winchester cases, Federal LP Primer. This particular load will shoot 1 1/2" or better off sand bags at 25 yds, the pistol is a Springfield 1911 that I smithed as a student while enrolled in Trinidad St. Jr College Gunsmith program. There are tons of good plinking 45 loads. I've used mainly Bullseye and Universal for mine. With Jacketed/Plated I'll use either but for lead I am just using clean burning powders (IE not bullseye). Its like the perfect storm of sludge when using that and I grew tired of having to use a dental pick to clean out the black crud in my gun. Universal and lead doesn't leave a clean gun, but it isn't awful either. The loads I've used with 230 grain LRN is 4.3 of Bullseye and 4.7 of Universal. I've actually got some Green Dot with works great for my 9mm loads that I need to try next.

My go to load is, 5.1 gr. Win 231 and Hornady bullets. Works great in 2 45's. Win 231 is superior to bullseye, in the cleaning aspect.

I use hardcast lead 230-gr. bullets and 4.9 to 5.2 grains of WW 231.

I don't load 230 RN very often (do you mean 230 Lead RN or 230 FMJ?).
In my case, when I do load this type of load, I use the FMJ bullet and 5.0 grains of Bullseye.

I am using 4.4 grain of Titegroup under 230 grain hard cast round nose lead. I split the difference from a min. 4.0 to a max. 4.8. Works good.

Also if you go the 231 route, Hodgdon HP38 is the exact same thing for a little cheaper.

If you really want to have fun with a cast 230 gr. RN, push it with 4 gr. Trail Boss

I use 700X for shotshells, 9mm and 45ACP. It is quite a versatile powder that burns fairly clean in all uses. I don't recall off the top of my head how many grains for 45, but there are a lot of good sources out there.

4.0 grains of Tite Group works well for me in 230 grain ball, 230 grain LRN, and for a real light load, 200 grain LSWC.

I used to use the same charge of Bullseye, but Tite Group is a much cleaner burning powder, for me anyhow.

Just be careful when you're reloading.

With most of the powders listed here it's possible to get a double charge in the case without any problems at all.

Except when you pull the trigger...

That's what 9.8 grains of WW 231 does to a .45 case. But, it didn't hurt my Springfield in the least.

I load on a Dillion and to date no double charges. I think you are less prone to double charges on progressives than if you charge the cases on a loading block. When I used loading blocks and an RCBS little Dandy, I would miss a case, get out of sequence. I do not remember a double charge but it could happen.

Anyway I use 4.5 grains Bullseye behind a 230 LRN. Works great.

+1 for 230 gr and 5.0 gr of W231/HP-38.

Also, 4.0 gr of Promo/Red Dot makes a great plinking load.

This is why you check powder levels in the now charged cases with the eyeball.
