wear marks on a shotgun = smoothe action, reliability, toughness. plain and simple. i made a thread bagging on my mossbergs because of the springs going bad. well, now that theyre getting worked in pretty heavily i am in LOVE with my 590's. they get smoother with every shot. shoot, clean, repeat!!!! i'm not even going to put the wilson springs and various addons on for at least another 150 shots. probably around the 5-600 rd mark.

Here are my primary Sporting Clays, Hunting and Skeet guns ( top one is a 12ga, then the 20ga, 28ga and the .410 ).

These guns are all about 8 years old ( the 12ga has about 40,000 shells thru it, the 20ga maybe 15,000, the 28ga a good 25,000 and probalby 5,000 thru the .410 ) - they have killed countless birds and clay targets ...

Notice the nicks on the stock of the 12ga and 20ga / but I think the 28ga and the .410 are as smooth as a baby's butt .....

You knew I was going to jump on you about you don't have to abuse your guns to have a good time ( skin grows back / don't drop and scratch up your guns Brent ...). They are all Browning XS Skeet models with 30" barrels ...

Here's my Browning BPS's one 12ga one 20ga ( bought them in about 1976 ? ) ...... they're pretty beat up too.

Probably 75,000 shells at least thru the 12ga / and 50,000 maybe thru the 20ga ....... I don't shoot them much anymore but I'm real fond of them. There are a couple of nicks on the stocks .... mostly from the kids and grandkids shooting these ( not from me ..)...

Well they nuttin but a couple super cheap mossberg pieces... Absolutely no CLASS in my guns... I couldn't see a single blemish on the OU's and just the wear on the mag tube of the pumps... nice guns!

Okie dokie lil miss hogdogs took some pics for me...
DISCLAIMER these are ghastly abominations of weaponry...
My meager frugal arsenal.
I consider it fairly sufficient though...

From left to right Mav 88 12, Mossy 500 20, Gamo air rifle, Marlin 336 .30-30, .22 savage MK from walmart, and last is my newest baby... a ruger MKIII 5 1/2 bull barrel 22/45.
Now to the rode hard put up or generally just used...
Pre 1990 Mossberg 500 has a minimum of 5,000 rounds up to 8,000 likely max. Most with PGO as just a fun shooter. The black stock is from my Maverick (formally juniors) as I needed a full stock following the roll over that tore up my arm.

This is the 88 junk stock gotten for it ... note the fracture at receiver... This gun has only a few hundred rounds thru it. It is not a mainline HD gun so less useage/wear marks but the scratches on the FUGLY stock make up for that

This savage .22 is one damaged in the crash... I had all of the guns in first pic minus the pistol in the SUV... the Marlin rear stock was in 3-5 pieces (I never saw it as junior got it to grampa for repair while I was in St, Louis in critical care.
This plastic stock cracked from bolt handle indent down to front of trigger guard. I tried to repair it with deep melting with a high power solder gun...

Obviously my guns are as ugly as my dogs and I...

Engineer, While you can't tell in pics, and I wager not in person, that is the rear stock that was in at least 4 pieces... My dad loves working on old wooden boats and has gotten quite good with wes system epoxy...

BigJim, I did understand your "dry humor"

I started this post hoping a ton of guys would post up some well worn HD guns. Not to pick on the new guys, rather to show that well used guns mean more than accessories... For ya'll that "sport shoot" i understand fully that it is with finer arms and not as likely to have "beater marks"...
FWIW, the scratches on the high corners of my 20 gauge receiver is from it "roading" on the dash while on the "red roads" looking for diamond backs... I hog hunt those areas and I try to eliminate "collateral damage" to the dogs... Hogs are threat enuff.
To pretty it up temporarily she has had sharpie marker cover up make up applied

We understand eachother ... thanks. And its always good to see photos of a gun collection that someone enjoys. ( but I still hope my clean shop photos made you whimper a little ...).

Its kind of like the holster wear on an old S&W model 10 revovler .38 spl, that an uncle bought new in 1946 when he got home from the war. Then he carried it as a deputy sheriff for 25 + years ..... and I have his western holster and his gun in my collection. All the parkerized finish is just about worn off the gun - but so what ... I carried it for years in the woods too and I still like shooting it once in a while ( despite the fact that I have a bunch of fancy semi-auto's and revolvers now in my collection as well.

As long as you're having fun man - that is about all that matters. But like I said to you a few weeks ago / I hope life is good to you and someday you can afford to buy and shoot whatever you want - whether its an 870 or a
$ 25,000 shotgun, it doesn't really matter.

a clean shop is the sign of a sick mind...I can't help it../its my reloading room, woodshop, etc so I do spend some time down there - but my wife and I work together, live together ....a man has to have someplace to escape once in a while. Its a priveledge having my shop indoors, in my basement, and plumbed for dust pickup, etc - its not too big / but it works for me / and I have everything there I need for small projects ( refinishing gunstocks, I do some woodturning (pens, pepper mills,) and wood boxes primarily .. and handguns and shotguns .... Life is easy and good.

Hogdogs, I thought you were talking about some serious wear marks. Not just some field scratch or fingerprints. Here's my main Skeet gun, a Perazzi Mirage from the mid 80s. Check out the breech face: It's shot so many rounds that the firing pin holes have become elongated. This is one reason you may not want to shoot as many reloads as I have.

Zip, Very nice! Nuttin wrong with a wore out gun! When a guy says "will last a lifetime" they have to remember that a lifetime is relative!
My buddy with a car shop would answer the "Does the part have a lifetime guarantee?" "Yessir the part is guaranteed to last the life of the part"

6by, That forestock speaks volumes to the life that gun has lived! The rear does too but the fore sure makes me imagine the hands racking shells for hours on end...

I have had that Remington 870 police model since '79. I have put over 30K rounds through it. For years it was my only shotgun and spent a lot of time on the range and in the field. Always surprised people how well an 18" barrel did against dove. In the mid '80s I took it to Mexico on a dove hunt. I scored 62 dove with 75 rounds in 15 minutes. Too bad I can not take my kids down there anymore with the confidence we had in our safety back then.
