What flavor '58 Remington?
I have one of each, the standard 8" and a 5 1/2".
Of the two I favor the 5 1/2"er as it handlea so much better! I owned the long one first and when I got a Poiettia short barreled model I just fell in love! Power dosen't seem to be any different between the two and both hit hard as hell with 35 g powder charges. I holster mine in a large frame cross drew holster, though the shortie fits my favorite sholder holster that I carry my Ruger Vaqueri=o in. Recoil isn't any different between the two either both are mild shooters due to the grip angle and overall weight of the revolvers. I guess it's a matter of personal preferance as to which model you fancy. I have shot the 250 gr LRN cast bullets in the short one and there is definately some recoil with those! I have also fired a .45 LC conversion kit in the short frame and shooting Reloaded ammo in .45 Scofield it preferred and shot those the best of the cartrige conversions, They'd drop a large horse on the spot! So pick your poison. WHich do you choose as your favorite '58 Remington model? |

Both are great fun, but I like the 5.5 better.

I have both....
Plus one with a four inch barrel that I rehabbed.
I like the long barrel for performance, I think and the 5.5 for looks and balance although to me balance is not that important. The four inch parrel job is real cute.

I've had both barrel lengths in the 1858. Got rid of the 8 inch (although nothing wrong with my former one, nor any 8 inch). I just like my Uberti .44, 5.5 inch barrel that I rehab'd (in the white) best. Like my R&D fluted cylinder that it came with too. Best of both worlds. Hard to take a pic of though because of the gleam. I've also owned a 5.5 inch barrel custom cut down and recrowned barrel "target" model Pietta 1858 in stainless (sold it) and currently own two Pietta 1860's too, but in my experience, I think the Uberti overall quality is just a leeeetle bit better than the Pietta overall quality. At least in fit and finish. And I like the dovetailed rammer holder and dovetailed front sight, both of which are NOT dovetailed, but soldered on the Piettas. (Much more trouble to remove and replace). Other's experience "quality" wise, may differ.
