Small shotguns

I have been looking into starter sized firearms for my son to learn on, lately and have been asking alot of questions about 20ga shotguns.
I also saw the chipmunk rifle and noticed it had a 16" bbl and a 30" OAL.
Now, I know that a shotgun minimum bbl length is 18.5" - I would cut down to 20" just to be safe.
But (and here's the question):
is there a minimum overall length for a shotgun? (in Maryland, if that applies)
Or can I shave the stack to pistol grip if I want? I don't want, BTW. just want a shorter little-boy sized one.
But i dont want to break ANY firearms laws, local or federal.
thanks,
Carl

I bought my son a Rem 870 Express Youth 20 ga. 20" bbl, screw in chokes, shortened stock, nice wood. This is a fantastic shotgun. Its very short and handy and should be just the ticket for a youngster or a wife.
Dont let the shorter barrel fool ya, he was hitting them clays way out there with it.

Just wish someone made a sidesaddle for it. It was $212. out the door. Check em out, I think you'll like em!

Its 40 1/4" long, overall.
This is one sweet little pump shotgun which'll never be outgrown, its equally good for ducks/clays, home defense with buckshot or slugs, or even deer for that matter. And it handles so sweet because of its size!

From Title 18 USC. Minimum overall length of 26 inches. Minimum barrel length 18 inches.

Save the stock cutoff for later reinstallation. If you do, drill a couple holes in the butt past the proposed cut line. That way you will have holes for locater dowells if you put it back on.

You might want to add some filler to the front of the grip, make it easier for little fingers to reach the trigger.

Enjoy, both of you.
