Bullseye and Titegroup because my wife brought 8 lbs of each home from Kalif. trip last year. Used a lot of Unique in the past, but prefer faster burners in 1911's. Mostly cast 200 gr. SWC's, which, BTW are working fine in an XDs 45. This made me extremely happy as it's my only mold for 45ACP.

I guess I'm stunned no one has mentioned Winchester Super Field yet. It was rated very highly in the Lee 2nd Edition for my chosen bullet, the 200gr. LSWC, so I bought an 8lb. jug, and so far it has been fabulous. Before WSF, I used Hodgdon Clays and it was great, too. Very clean burning

I definitely like the performance of Unique. It certainly is in my top 45 list of powders.

just for fun
I'm gonna try and make a list of the powders I've tried in 45 ACP (for autos):
in no particular order: -W231 -Bullseye -AA2 -AA2 Imp -700X -800X -Power Pistol -WAP -AA5 -AA9 -Unique -Universal -Nitro 100 -WSL -HS6 -N350 -3N37 -WST -W296 (don't ask) -2400 -Longshot I'm pretty certain that's the full list. I'm definitely certain the earlier list I presented is correct

I've used 7.0 grains of Unique for many years under a 200SWC lead. Stays in the black on a 50ft NRA target, offhand. From a rest, all in 10 ring.

It looks like many if not the majority of re-loaders are using HS6, HP38/W231 and a couple of other common and available powders. I see that only two users have posted using Red Dot.
I used HS6 for my 45 loads but cannot find any locally so I acquired a pound of Red Dot which I'm currently evaluating. First impression is that the recoil is the same as HS6 with similar accuracy, in fact, I'll be at the range today comparing Red Dot and IMR SR7625 versus HS6. I've read on other forums that Red Dot is a highly regarded powder for the 45ACP and that SR7625 is also highly regarded for nearly all hand gun loads. I find that SR7625 has significantly less recoil compared to HP38 and HS6 in 380 Auto, 9mm, and 45ACP. Both Red Dot and SR7625 are very clean burning in the calibers and guns that I have used. For the record, my 45 range gun is a Norinco 1911A1 (5" bbl) and my carry 45 is a Taurus PT145 Mil Pro (3.5", 10+1). The Taurus has chambered, fired and ejected every round that that I have put through it. I have settled on using SR7625 for the Taurus loads because of the relatively mild recoil with this powder. Just my two cents..... Last edited by vulcan73; January 22, 2014 at 08:37 AM. |

I have never used Red Dot. However, I have used SR7625 in my 45s. I also noticed the lighter recoil. On a recent session at the range, I tested it to some other powders I frequently use. I can share the numbers, but to save some typing, the SR7625 was well below powders such as Unique, Longshot and Power Pistol. The slowest, although not a lot slower than SR7625, was 800X - which had been my favorite range plinking powder. Going forward, I'm going to use Power Pistol or Longshot and perhaps Unique. |

As I stated in my post above (#66), I went to the range yesterday. I continue to get the same results. I find no significant difference between HS6 and Red Dot in terms of group size and recoil with IMR SR7625 comparing to both with less recoil.
The Taurus PT145 Mil Pro fed, fired and ejected every round as expected using SR7625. For the PT145, I set up a large spatter target (man sized torso) and put every round into it someplace, which was my goal for a defensive gun with a 3.5" barrel. I will continue using SR7625 for the PT145 with Red Dot, SR7625 and HS6 (when I can locate it) for the 1911. I've noted the powders others are using and will grab some if/when I come across it locally. |
