Need GOOD riflesmith in Eastern TN
I have a Winchester pre 64 in .30-06 that needs some serious help. I had previously tried to have a riflesmith (location withheld) to put it into a McMillan lightweight composite stock, was supposed to be pillar bedded. Well, maybe it is but it's crooked. The trigger is awful (was supposed to be tuned/replaced). The nice Leupold scope won't zero because for some reason the rings don't line up with the bore. Could someone recommend a COMPETENT smith in my area so I could get this thing tuned up? Many thanks!

Sounds as tho Bubba got his hands on that thing. And, not wanting to be a smart azz, you don't have a M94 in 30/06. Ain't no such animal. GW

I haven't used him for any serious work, but I'm told he is very capable. The minor work he has done for me has been excellent and timely. |

Can't recommend anyone in your area, but that would be a fun repair project.
I'd check the alignment of the holes for the scope base on the receiver. It may have to be filled and redrilled/tapped. The stock work is no big issue either. I'd mill out the pillar bedding and redo it entirely. New pillar bedding posts and acraglass. Trigger work is no big deal either.

Half my business is fixing someone else's screwups...
Because you own a hand drill & hammer it doesn't make you a gunsmith! Adding sights/optics mounts *Should Be* "Gunsmith 101", but I feel your pain, I've seen it 10,000 times. Guys that don't own a flat bed or doesn't know how to use it carving up perfectly good firearms. Zero idea of what true or plum is or how to get it... And for what they do to fit/finish and triggers they should have fingers cut off! |
