.357 wadcutter, Revolver, 38 or 357 case?
I typically shoot light load wadcutters from my .357 Mag revolver. Leading wise would it be better to shoot from a 357 case or a 38 case?

You'll get a bit of a carbon ring using .38 cases. If you have the .357 cases, I'd use those. If you don't want save your .357 cases for full power loads, I wouldn't hesitate to use .38 cases.

I get some leading before and into the cylinder throats and a little into the barrel. My cylinder throats are .358 and I'm using .357 wad cutters. (next time I buy wad cutters I'll get .358) I'm thinking that if running .357 instead of .358 can cause leading then wouldn't shooting a projectile about along a length of .100 in a diameter about .380 also cause problems?

I much prefer the .357 cases with wadcutters. I've been loading cast as opposed to swagged and leading has not been an issue. I load them for the wife but she allows me to clean her model 28 for her, so I can attest to the fact it cleans up easy and well. Have you tried Trailboss with those loads. Very nice and accurate. I like being able to easily view the powder levels. I know that the airspace on other powders is not supposed to matter, but my brain tells me it has to. Of course this is the same brain that over 50 years has led me down some pretty rocky paths, so who knows.

Dennis,
Always been loading hard cast. I guess my first question should be, what is bad leading? If I shoot say 100 rounds its going to take me a 1/2 hour of brush, let sit and brush again with something like hoppes. One issue is that I might be using a bit more Bullseye then need be. (3.2 in a 38 case with a 148 gr DEWC). Probably should be 2.8 or so. This is the second time tonight seing this "Trailboss" thing. Gonna have to check it out. |
