gun safes...false advertizing

am I the only person in the world that can't seem to fit 36 guns in a 36 gun safe? I have 4 hand guns and 16 long guns and my safe is stuffed, I guess this is the universe telling me to stop buying until my tetris skills get better.

When I bought my safe the seller told me that 30 rifles would fit under perfect conditions with the scopes removed and no magazines sticking out, no attachments attached and whatever. He then tried to sell me a bigger safe even though I had way fewer than 30.

I have no where near that and the safe is getting crowded.

No, but we do have some shotguns in there...and it is creatively stacked.

I have a Fort Knox 44 gun safe. I don't think anyone could fit that many rifles in there.

I got the larger safe so I could separate the wood stocks from the composite/AR style.

I have a 48 gun, safe, the only way you can get 48 long guns in it is to remove the scopes and bolts. It can be done but not practical.

I figure for 48 long guns, I MIGHT get by two 48 gun safes.

Regardless, I think its an un-written law that the gun you want to use today has to be in the back of the safe.

I think they rate them as if they contained only lever actions w/o scopes.

you can get 48 guns in a 48 gun safe. You just jam them in.
48 bulldogs, neos, and snub noses would probably fit.

I think they should advertise:

48 guns, if you dont care about damaging and scratching them.
24 if you actually care about your guns.

I have been giving serious thought to one of those racks that lets me store my handguns standing up with the grip facing out. Something like this one,

There are issues with the size and shape of several of my long and short-long guns. My .308 takes up the space of three rifles with it's oversized bolt handle, scope and McMillan stock. My SBR and SBSs aren't tall enough to fit into the racks so they must lean against the sides and the back. To avoid bumping guns against each other in the safe, I have had to sacrifice a few spaces around the guns that get shot the most often.

Sort of like how many people can get in a NY subway car. It depends on how big the guys are who are pushing them in.

I have seen it go to both extremes ..... saw a guy with a "48 gun safe", with 60 .22 cal target rifles in it.

My own safe says it will hold 16 guns .... there's 1/2 that in there, and any more would have to be subcompact pistols .....

Problem is your not utilizing the safe properly. First remove all shelving then lay the safe on its back. Now you can easily stack and pack the advertised amount of guns.

I know what you mean, I have a 50 gun and a 36 gun, I'm sure I could stuff that many long guns in them with scopes banging up against eachother and so on, figure about half of what they say they will hold to space them a tiny bit

You can put more guns in if they're all Youth sized 22 rifles or mouse guns. A scoped evil black rifle will take the space of one or two iron sighted guns.

Try putting some in barrel down, this helps in fitting more in.
Works for me !!!

Eek! I'd never store a gun resting on the muzzle.

I have figured out if you leave the bolts open, you can put them much closer together.

About half of mine are muzzle down. It's not like the muzzle is resting on a gravel surface or anything.

===================================

My gun safes are carpetted and have an extra layer of soft rubber matting on floor = no problem.

However, if your safe is CHEAP with no protection, I would not use at all !!!

If you elect to store a gun muzzle down, put a piece of wood (not carpet) beneath it. Carpets can retain moisture and that would cause the muzzle to rust. Wood can too, but less so. The purpose of the wood is to protect the muzzle.

With creative "leaning" (guns at an angle along the side/back walls), besides removing all the shelving except for a full-width shelf 6" from the top/roof, I easily fit 30 rifles into my "22-gun" Cannon safe, including their scopes & bolts (the BA rifles have their bolts open/back) - and none touch each other (barely).
NO slings allowed, though.............

My Cannon's interior, however, has an open front to the two sets of rifle racks/rests, and not the closed front/bar that many safes have, that require tilting the rifle to get it out - IMO setting up an easy hit on it's neighbor.

One half of the top shelf's for important family papers; the other half's for handguns (8 at present).

The bottom of the safe, betwixt the rifle butts, has room for a Golden Rod dehumidifier on one side & a loose scope or three on the other.

Aside from the creative storage methods mentioned above (especially the very effective muzzle up/down technique), I'll let you in on a little known secret.

It doesn't matter what the manufacturer says the safe will hold. Two safes, from two different manufacturers, with the same internal dimensions, will hold the same amount of guns.

All of the manufacturers install their interiors, count the slots, and claim that as the capacity. The problem is that 1 slot won't always hold one gun. However, 10 cubic feet will always hold 10 cubic feet. When comparing capacities, disregard the number of slots, and look at the internal volume.
