HD shotgun

I have a freind who is new to guns and looking for a home defence shotgun. He would like something that is functional but doesn't break the bank. I was thinking a NEF Pardner pump, 870, or Mossy 500. Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks

I would personally steer clear of the NEF, imported gun at about the same cost as a Remington or Mossberg.
I prefer the Mossberg ergonomics. Have him handle and/or fire both of the american guns and see what he likes best.

a Benelli Nova tactical 12-gauge costs around $380 - 400 brand new. Is that too expensive for your friend? It's made of lightweight polymer and comes with ghost ring sights and a 3.5 inch chamber, in case your friend wants to experiment with magnum loads. I definitely like mine.

If it has to be a new gun, the lowest cost option for me would be the Maverick 12 gauge pump. If used is OK, I would go with an 870 or 500.

I prefer the 870 myself.

+1 for the 870.
BTW you should relay that he should research his defense loads and practice with them. This will help him to not be caught off gaurd from the unexpected recoil from the 000 buckshot the dealer recommended him. That could turn out poorly in a SD or HD situation. Give him 100 rounds and then help him get signed up for TFL so we can hear how it went.

Maverick 88, made by mossberg and only usually less than $200. I haave a 20" 8 shot (7+1) and love it. 2000 trouble free rounds thus far...the more I shoot it the slicker the action gets

I'm gonna go +1 to the Mossberg 590. If the military uses them to clear houses in Afghanistan, it's good enough to clear mine. Go get an 870 if you get bored and want to do skeet shooting/bird hunting, though. or a 500, for that matter.

CDNN has the Semiauto Mitchell Sabre shotguns for only $279. And you get both a 22 inch home defense barrel, and a 28 inch hunting barrel too.

Includes seven choke tubes, including a long rifled one for slugs. Action, chamber, and barrel are all chrome plated too. That is something you normally only see on expensive semiauto shotguns.

Not a bad looking gun either. Here is what this combo package looks like:

Check it out in their catalog:

The NEF Pardner Pump is a clone of the Remington 870. I'd go with either the 870 or the 500. Both will treat you well. If those two are outside the budget, then yes the Pardner Pump is a great choice.

I bought an excellent Moss. 500 several years ago in a pawnshop for $50. It had a blown BBL. Wood looked new. Hacksaw, file and cold blue turned it into a dandy home defender.

Another vote for the Maverick 88 HD. I picked mine up at Academy Sports for about $179, put a few rounds through it and now it stands ready to defend me and mine....

Remington 870, Mossberg 500 or 590, used Benelli M1 Super 90, or possibly a Stoeger 2000 Defense. I haven't used the Stoeger but it's supposed to be a clone of the old Benelli M1 S90 produced by a sister company.

I don't own an 870 so my vote goes to what I do use. I keep a Mossberg 500Persuader next to my bed. I keep five 2 3/4" 00 buckshot in the magazine tube and 6 on the side saddle.
