Smith & Wesson 460XVR barrel length photo

I'm going to buy a Smith & Wesson 460XVR and I'm trying to decide between a 7.5" or 8.5" barrel length. It's hard to find them both somewhere to compare side-by-side.

Does anyone own both and can you post a photo? It would be even better to see a 6.5", 7.5" and 8.5" side by side if you own all three.

I havent seen anything shorter than the 8-1/2. I am in a similar predicament as you. Only I am trying to decide betwen 8-1/2 & 10-1/2. I was able to but a BFR 10 next to a XVR 8-1/2. In wasnt much help to me. Good luck finding a couple of XVR's in a store together. Maybe a BPS, Cabelas, or Gander Mtn.

I have the 460V which has a 5 inch barrel and really love it, but don't really have any practical use for it here in New York State.

Kayakersteve@ Are you a hunter? Can you use a revolver in NYS? I have a place in PA. Just S. of Cowaneski lake (actually see the lake from my stand) I plan on using the 460 to put meat in the freezer.

Photos of the 500 Magnum in 7.5" and 8.5" barrel length would be good too.

@boogie man - Yes I hunt, but the 460V is even big and becomes cumbersome to carry when it is not really needed. I harvest a deer and a small spike with it the first year I had it - that year I had a leupold scope on it too and used a monopod to stabilize when shooting. I now have open sights on it and use it more for show and tell than anything else.

I usually caryry a 1911 when hunting and have shot and harvested more deer with that (<25 yards typically).

No matter what, the 460 and 500 are beasts of guns, but get heavy when carrying and hiking.

I have the XVR 460 with the 8 3/8" barrel. It's a gig revolver but I don't mind. In a good chest holster it's easier to carry than ur average carbine.

I got the 8 3/8 barrel for accuracy. I have shorter barreled .44 mags for general woods carry.

I look at it as a hunting pistol, not a plinker, correct. If you plan on using it as your primary weapon hunting, th longer barrel might be a better choice. If you are carrying it along with a rifle, I think the 6" is a much better choice.
