I don't get it!

No matter what I add to my arsenal, no matter how many rifles and shotguns I have, my favorite longarm is my humble H&R single barrel 12gauge. I've even been known to reach for it in hostile situations, ignoring the various ultimate-tactical-entry-space carbines.

What's wrong with me? Am I an old crumudgion? A throw-back?

I've been known to grab my broadsword first when I go to check out a "bump in the night," even though I have several other slightly more modern weapons at my disposal. But I live in an apartment with only a few rooms, so range is not as much an issue.

So if you're a throwback, what am I?

I guess I'm like you because I've got a gun cabinet full of pumps and autos but prefer my H&R 20 gauge Topper for Squirrel and general woods walking.I am kind of partial to my Fox side by side 20 gauge for grouse and pheasant.For me the H&R is so lite and easy to carry I guess thats why I like it so much. On a different note I have read that their slug guns are quite accurate.

There's something about singles that defies definition. Maybe it's the simplicity, the MOA that can be implemented well when one is scared past the point of sphincter control.

Maybe it's nostalgia.

Maybe it's the fact that the KISS Principle works.

Or maybe just long term familiarity with an extremely reliable tool.

Whatever it is, the next good H&R or Winchester 37 I run across at a reasonable price will get bought, and %^&* idea of whether I NEED another shotgun....

Actually a fellow could do a lot worse than singleshot shotgun for an only gun. For me I think simplicity has something to do it , so does ease of carry. if you're hunting with a pointer or beagle a safe way to carry is open action with a cartridge in the chamber
when game is made you close the action ,cock the hammer and you're ready to go.

Singles are also about the best deal going in the gun market (more versatile than a 22 and about as cheap) And with the new stuff at H&R you could get a rifle with the extra shotgun barrel for less than $250.

I'm down to 3-4 guns that I really use and want to keep. unfortunately I let all my singles go so maybe I'll have pick up another ,it will be 16 though (EH dave )

I'm pretty much down to the guns I'll keep forever too, Huntsman, but it's a bit more than 3 or 4.

And my next might be a 16, just for old time's sake.And maybe to see what it's like going full circle....

It's quite simple. I've discovered that single-shots never run out of ammunition. At least at the range I never have to stop shooting to load a magazine...

Many gun battles are won by the person who fired the last round. Ideally, you would like to be the person who shoots the last round and that round also being the first fired in the fight. If you can do that with your single barrel, then you don't need more barrels, semi, or pump action, right?

Of course out of a sense of pride, there aren't too many manfunctions you can blame on a gun like that to mask a poor shot on your part.
