Ok, I'll join in the fun I just picked up a Model 15 no dash, it shows a lot of holster wear around the muzzle and the cylinder where it would rest while carried but where the leather wouldn't touch, the bluing is nice. the SN is 378xxx I wouldn't mind a birth date and rough value. Also if anyone has a site where I could see how to grade wear I'd appreciate it.

Dates to the 1974-1977 era, most likely made in 1974

Dates to 1959. There should be a letter K prefix, separated a bit from the numbers. To get a current value estimate I've found it useful to search web sites such as Gunbroker and GunsAmerica, just remember asking price isn't always the selling price.

The Blue Book of Gun Values by Stephen Fjestad has a useful guide to estimating condition based on percent of original remaining finish. It has good color photos of various firearms along with the author's estimate of condition.

The model number is stamped on the frame just forward of the cylinder. Open the cylinder to see it.

The "K" identifies it as a adjustable sighted k frame. 38 means it's either a model 15 (4" or less barrel) or model 14 (6" or longer barrel).

5 shot or 6? Is the chambering on the side of the barrel .38 Special (spl) or just .38 S&W?
Take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt, include any letter prefixes. Depending on grips, you may have to remove them to see it.

.38/44 Heavy Duty Model of 1950 (pre model 20).
It's the "N" frame (44) chambered for the 38 Special. Many, many years ago there were very hot 38 loads designed specifically for those guns.
Serial numbers ran from S86000 in 1952 to S94999 in 1953.

It's one of the variations of the .38 Chiefs Special and was made in 1952.
Serial numbers ran from 7369 to 21342 that year.
