Range Report Savage 10BA, Reload Request
Have attached two target images. .716 MOA at 200 yards. .308 Hornady 150gr SST factory loads. Rifle is out of box. Wind on that day was calm or gust at about 70 degrees to target. Barrel twist is 10/length 24".
I need a good recipe for 800 yards. I am at 7600 feet and will be shooting at that altitude or slightly higher and I expect it to be cold, low 20s. I have Lapua brass but do not currently have a bullet in mind or powder selected. Recommendations would certainly be appreciated. |

I don't think you can go wrong with a 175 gr Sierra MatchKing bullet. I've been using Varget powder under that bullet with good results....pushing it at 2600 FPS. Out of my Savage 10 FCP, it will group 5 shots at .5MOA typically and sometimes better on a really good day.

I would think you want a "hunting load" 7600 elevation cold.... If that's the case don't use match kings from Sierra.

I second the 175smk's. 42.3 RL-15 , CCI BR-2 primers and your good to go. Should get you right in that 2600 to 2650 fps range. H4895 works wonders too.

As with all hand loads not developed in your firearm, back off the powder charge and work up safely to what works in yours. If this is a hunting load (you didn't say it was), then you might want to review using a Sierra GameKing bullet. |

178 amax with either varget or 4064. Also, the win brass load above will be too stout w/ your Lapua brass.

FWIW I have a FCP-K that I believe is the same gun as yours minus the chassis Mine has the accustock . Mine likes 178gr A-Max , 40.3gr IMR-4064 WLR primer , Remington case , seated 10 thou off the lands . 2540fps
175gr smk , 40.5gr IMR-4895 , WLR primer , WCC-06 case , seated 15 thou off the lands . 2555fps I shot this load out of the very same model you have . It shot sub moa 190gr smk 38.5 gr Viht N540 , WLR primer , LC-11 cases , OAL 2.800 . 2340fps . At your altituge that would be plenty of velocity for 800 yards . If I remember right that will do 800 at sea level That all being given I agree with the other saying Varget and H4895 would be best . Both of those should be a little more consistent in extreme weather .
