Loaded one short with #00 buck. Side saddle has three rounds of buck and three rounds of slugs. I keep it loaded this way in order to select a slug right off if need be.

4 rnds of #4 buck, next 4 are "special" slugs that I have been experimenting with.

one could easily use 6 shot at the close ranges inside a home. they will still put a 4 inch hole in a badguy.

Just curious, what are your reasons for loading in that way. Some of you would go alternating between shot and slug, etc. Why?

Thanks

People carry slugs as well as shot due the extended range and increased accuracy of slugs vs the close range power of shot. Varing slugs to shot is a bad IMHO because you will forget which shell you have chambered in the heat of the moment, and you do not want to waste ammo.

Whatever's laying around

I guess I buck the "Buck" trend. 2 3/4" 3-Dram Trap Loads with 1 1/4 oz of 7 1/2s are cheap and plentiful. The house is 45 feet long and 22 feet wide. The longest straight-line distance is 26 feet. At that range, with full choke, I'm still going to punch a baseball-sized hole in Mr. Dumbass. And don't talk to me about Bad Guys with body armor. They don't wear it. If they did, the blast would fold them in half and my follow-up shot would turn their heads to mush. That's just me, though. I try to let inertia and pellet count do the dirty work.

home defense

Since we are in the subject, I looked at 1300 defender this week with the extended plug, and also a Mossberg shorty with the extended plug and a Remington, and I was wondering what ya'll think think about it doubling as a duck gun too. Any preferences? I'd use 00 buck the first round too, and then it would be slugs, baby.

I hunt ducks, and HD guns in the blind make me nervous. That short barrel is hard to lean against the edge of the blind and if it slips, things will get exciting fast. The short barrel may make the gun whippier than you need, whereas a good 26" barrel will swing more smoothly on those evil canards. And on ducks, I use steel #4's followed by more #4's. That's good Duck Defense.

I don't know about ducks, but I have no problem shooting trap/skeet with my 18in 870.
