Hornady Data for .45 ACP?
Could someone post the OAL listed in the Hornady book for .230 gr. RN FMJ and FN FMJ bullets in .45 ACP? I'm loading them in Starline brass with CCI primers and 4.7-4.8 gr. Win. 231.
Much appreciated. |

Not from the Hornady book but I can tell you that 230 FMJ gets seated to 1.265 oal. Why such a light charge of 231?

Thanks for the data JibJab..... much appreciated!
The light load? It was my first batch EVER of reloads, so I went with a light start load. I'll be moving it up into the 4.7 to 4.8 gr. range (I believe 5.1 is the max load). The rounds bouncing off my forehead did get a bit tedious. Bwahahahahaha! |

Good answer. I've been loading 5.5 gr 231 under 230 FMJ or 225 gr RNL for so long that your load just sounded light to me. I loaded them lighter way back in the day but they didn't shoot so well so expect them to get better as you increase the charge weight.
Consulting my notes, I see that I seated my FMJ's to 1.245. It's my RNL that get seated to 1.265 as they are a little more pointed than FMJ. My Speer book shows an OAL of 1.275 for FMJ with 5.1 being start and 5.6 gr being max with 231. So if you're going to be seating deeper...5.1 makes sense for max. |

Thanks Edward, I'm loading a couple small batches today, and then heading to the range Monday or Tuesday. I'm hoping to find an accurate, functional load, but time will tell. I'm really enjoying my new hobby, it's SO interesting. I hope to get into .308 Win. reloading this winter (once I get comfortable with pistol cartridge loading) as it'll open up another area of interest. I'm still reading non-stop trying to expand my knowledge, but enjoying the process.
Thanks again for your help guys. |
